Role Overview –Fairhurst is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join our Newcastle Office. This role is ideal for a motivated and technically strong engineer with substantial consultancy experience who is looking to take the next step in their career.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Design & Technical Delivery

  • Manage and deliver UK‑based structural engineering projects in accordance with UK Building Regulations and all relevant design standards.
  • Lead and undertake structural engineering assessments and inspections of new and existing buildings in steel, concrete, masonry, and timber.
  • Carry out detailed analysis and design using industry‑standard software including Tekla Structural Designer and Tedds.
  • Prepare high‑quality drawings, calculations, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Produce well‑structured technical reports, including structural surveys and design justifications.
  • Ensure all technical outputs are accurate, consistent, and compliant with standards and client requirements.

Project Management

  • Coordinate and oversee multiple concurrent projects, ensuring deadlines, budgets, and quality standards are met.
  • Manage work packages, project resources, and deliverables to support successful project delivery.
  • Contribute to project programmes, risk management, and efficient workflow planning.
  • Maintain clear documentation, progress updates, and project records in line with Fairhurst’s quality systems.

Client & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Liaise with and lead other members of the design team to deliver coordinated, integrated solutions that meet client objectives.
  • Engage professionally with clients, contractors, statutory bodies, and stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Represent Fairhurst at external meetings, networking events, and industry functions as required.
  • Provide clear, confident verbal and written communication to support excellent client service.

Quality & Compliance

  • Work in accordance with Fairhurst’s Quality Assurance procedures and industry legislation.
  • Uphold best practices, professional standards, and relevant Eurocodes and design codes.
  • Review work of junior staff to ensure accuracy, compliance, and high technical quality.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement across processes, methodologies, and technical outputs.
  • Provide technical guidance, supervision, and mentorship to Graduate and Project Engineers.
  • Support the development and progression of junior engineers through structured feedback and knowledge-sharing.
  • Promote a positive team culture that values collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
  • Act as a role model for professionalism, technical excellence, and Fairhurst’s core values.
PERSON SPECIFICATION

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered or near‑Chartered status with ICE or IStruct

    E (MICE or MIStruct

    E).

Experience

  • Strong experience working as a Senior Structural Engineer within a UK consultancy environment.
  • Proven track record delivering projects across industrial, residential, retail, commercial, and healthcare sectors.
  • Varied experience with common structural forms and building types.
  • Demonstrable experience using Eurocodes and relevant UK design standards.
