GMV is an experienced technology group - delivering innovative solutions that span satellite, launch, ground, and cyber systems for defense, civil and commercial customers. When you join our team, you’ll be part of a special collection of problem solvers, thought leaders, and innovators. Join us and take your place in space and aerospace engineering.

We are searching for an experienced FPGA Engineer to support our team within the Timing and Frequency Division (Navigation), based within our Harwell Office within the UK.

What challenges will you be taking on?

The FPGA Engineer will lead the design, implementation, and validation of gateware (HDL) systems, as well as the development and testing of associated firmware and hardware.

As part of our team, you will work with a broad range of technologies, including atomic clocks, GNSS, and time transfer protocols over Ethernet, wireless, optical, and satellite links. The team also explores innovative solutions such as quantum technologies and machine learning applications.

In this role, you will contribute directly to the White Rabbit project, a technology that has become an industry standard, providing sub-nanosecond synchronisation and deterministic data transfer to distributed devices interconnected within a WR network. You will play a key role in advancing this technology and ensuring its integration into cutting-edge applications.

The ideal candidate will have proven experience in the design, development, simulation and testing of gateware (HDL), firmware, and hardware systems, combined with a passion for tackling complex, multidisciplinary engineering challenges. We are looking for someone eager to innovate, collaborate across diverse technical domains, and contribute to advanced solutions in timing and synchronisation technologies.

  • Assist in hardware design, reviews and production.
  • Develop automated tests, to be run on hardware in Continuous Integration (CI) pipelines.
  • Collaborate with your colleagues in the hardware/software co-design process, where hardware, HDL, firmware, Linux device drivers and host applications are developed and reviewed together.
  • Produce detailed technical documentation, including requirement specifications, design justifications, test reports.
Essential experience and qualifications
  • 4+ years of professional experience as an Electronic/FPGA Engineer or in a related field
  • Proven experience in FPGA design and simulation using VHDL, Verilog, or System Verilog for Ultra Scale+ FPGAs.
  • Experience in the design of electronic circuits (schematics and PCB) based on FPGA or System-on-Chip.
  • Experience in the development of firmware and device drivers.
  • Proficiency with Git-based development workflows, including code reviews, merge requests, and CI pipelines.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable Skills
  • Experience with White Rabbit, PTP, or NTP-based systems. Strong knowledge of Ethernet architectures (e.g., 1G, 10G) used in network switches and/or routers.
  • Solid understanding of embedded Linux systems, network architectures, Python, PyTest, and Git Lab.
  • Knowledge of signal processing and software-defined radio (SDR).
