The North East Transport team is expanding, with opportunities across sustainable transport, active travel and major road schemes. The discipline supports the region’s ambition for greener, more inclusive mobility, delivering work ranging from National Highways projects to urban improvements, public realm enhancements and local transport initiatives.

Based across Newcastle and Stockton, the team brings together engineers, designers and project specialists with strong experience in alignment design, pavement design, drainage, contract documentation and BIM coordination. The group delivers transport projects end‑to‑end and provides a supportive environment focused on technical excellence, collaboration and long‑term career development.

The Opportunity

As a Senior Highway Engineer at Arup, you’ll play a key role in delivering a wide range of transport and highway projects.

You'll lead the development of drawings, reports, calculations, BOQs and specifications, ensuring work meets technical and contractual standards. You’ll collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, support bid preparation and contribute to high‑profile schemes across the region.

This role offers the chance to shape successful highways projects from feasibility through to detailed design and statutory processes. You’ll help maintain strong client relationships, work to tight deadlines and support the delivery of projects on time, within budget and to the highest quality. Experience with NEC contract preparation or project management is beneficial, and you’ll have opportunities to expand your skills in both areas.

You’ll

Thrive In This Role If You Bring
  • A relevant HND, degree or master’s qualification.
  • Experience using industry‑standard software (e.g., Civil 3D, AutoCAD, Auto Track, PDS Line, Micro Drainage).
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex issues, write clear reports and manage client relationships.
  • Professional qualification or progress toward one with a relevant institution.
  • Enthusiasm for transport and highways design, with an understanding of project delivery across the full lifecycle.
