This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions. Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions. Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements.

Key Responsibilities

From your first day with us you will be part of a policing family making a real difference. It is our mission to identify and protect vulnerable people, prevent and respond to harm and keep people safe. Surrey and Sussex Forensic Investigations department has an exciting opportunity to join Crime Scene Services in Surrey as a Crime Scene Investigator (CSI).

In this role you will act as lead forensic investigator at crime scenes of all types. You will be expected to:

  • Carry out the forensic investigation of crime scenes and any other police related incidents as required, including post-mortem examinations following an unexplained death.
  • Seize exhibits in line with agreed protocols to maintain the integrity, continuity and security of the evidence for investigative processes and court proceedings
  • Take detailed photographs of crime scenes.
  • Develop and implement examination strategies within each investigation to assist the wider investigative objectives.
  • Produce detailed written reports that illustrate the scene's layout and evidence locations. Use your expertise and observations to understand the sequence of events.
  • Collaborate with police officers and forensic experts to interpret evidence and decide on examination strategies
  • Undertake crime scene management duties and provide support and guidance for less experienced staff acting as coach where required .
  • Present evidence at court and explain its relevance in a clear, unbiased manner.
  • Perform your duties across Surrey and Sussex, making an equitable contribution to the designated shift pattern and on-call rota covering a 24-hour period, 7 days per week, 365 days per year.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to maintain competency and continuously develop in the role.
  • Be required to wear a Police Staff uniform as appropriate to the Force employer whilst on duty and maintain a smart appearance.
  • Be able to work within and comply with the appropriate measures required to maintain ISO accreditation standards. You will be required to undertake training and participate in the provision of auditing for accreditation purposes across Forensic Investigations when requested.

  • This role includes salary progression from a grade F (£30,495 - £35,020) to grade G (£33,128 - £39,149) upon completion of a training and competency program.

Skills & Experience

It is essential that candidates have a pass in both Maths and English GCSE or an equivalent qualification.

You must hold a current, full UK driving licence for manual vehicles, and will be required to pass an internal driving assessment to be authorised to drive police vehicles of the relevant class.
