Location: Newcastle upon Tyne

The opportunity has arisen to recruit two part time Finds Liaison Assistants (FLA) in North East England to work as part of the regional team led by the North East’s Senior Finds Liaison Officer. This post is for North East Museums and will be based at the Great North Museum:
Hancock working for Newcastle City Council. The role is part-time, equating to 29.6 hours per week (4 days) until March 2027; it may be extended beyond that point, funding dependent.

Responsibilities
  • Encourage participation in the Portable Antiquities Scheme and facilitate the administration of the Treasure Act (1996); identify and record archaeological objects found by members of the public; make the results accessible through the PAS national database and the relevant local authority’s Historic Environment Record.
  • Work alongside and under the operational oversight of the Senior Finds Liaison Officer (SFLO) for the PAS in the Northeast region; coordinate day‑to‑day work of the PAS in Newcastle.
  • Engage in outreach activities to raise awareness of the importance of recording finds and the value of the information collected at local, regional, and national levels.
  • Attend events and/or meetings that may be held in the evenings and on weekends at other sites and venues.
Qualifications
  • Interest and enthusiasm for research and archaeology.
  • High motivation, excellent communication skills and the ability to work across the region in the promotion of the Scheme.
  • Knowledge and experience of processes and issues relating to metal-detecting, Treasure legislation, and archaeology (particularly material culture).
  • Ability to coordinate the day‑to‑day work of the PAS under the overall direction of the SFLO.
Working location and hours

Based at the Great North Museum:
Hancock in Newcastle, part‑time position of 29.6 hours per week (4 days) until March 2027. Possibility of continuation beyond that date subject to funding.
