The Great North Children’s Hospital is looking to recruit a number of enthusiastic, caring and committed Health Care Assistants to join our outstanding workforce across both inpatient, outpatient and day‑case areas. We want our Children and Young People to receive the best possible care, and the right candidate will need to be passionate, caring and proactive. The successful candidates will be supported by an established Multidisciplinary team within the framework of a dynamic Children’s Hospital. You will be responsible for ensuring that our service users’ needs are met through the delivery of high‑quality care.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining a high standard of clinical work when carrying out observations and procedures, including heights, weights, blood pressures, blood sugars and urine analysis. A desirable requirement for this role is venepuncture skills, but this is not essential as training will be provided. Additionally, you will be responsible for ordering supplies and equipment for the department or ward area.

We require you to bring your qualification certificates, photographic identification and a portfolio of evidence of your skills and experience on the day of your interview. Your portfolio should include certificates for training carried out in your place of work, documentation of your skills and competencies signed by your manager or supervisor, and a reflection of your experience working in a healthcare setting.

GCSEs in English and Maths at Grades 3‑1 (or D‑G or Level 1 Functional/Key Skills) – please ensure you document this in your application; you will need to bring your certificates on the interview day.

NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care or equivalent direct care experience in a recognised healthcare environment – please ensure you document your qualifications and experience in your application; you will need to bring your certificates on the interview day.

  • Experience of caring in a health care setting
  • Ability to meet basic care needs of patients – washing, dressing and assistance with feeding etc.
  • Ability to communicate with members of the public and health care providers
  • Ability to work effectively under direct supervision, as part of the multi‑disciplinary team
  • Understanding of confidentiality
  • Alignment to trust values and core behaviours
  • Must be flexible to meet the needs of the service and be able to work a full variety of shifts including days and nights
  • Basic IT skills

All successful candidates will be given support before working in the clinical area, by taking part in our mandatory Healthcare Academy programme, if you are new to the Trust.

You will be required to provide photographic identification on the day of interview.

Person Specification Qualifications & Education
  • Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care or equivalent level qualification or relevant experience
  • GCSEs in English and Maths at Grades 3‑1 (or D‑G or Level 1 Functional/Key Skills)
  • GCSEs in English and Maths at Grades 9‑4 (or A*‑C or Level 2 Functional/Key Skills)
Knowledge & Experience
  • Understanding of confidentiality
  • Experience of caring in a health care setting
  • An understanding of working in the NHS
Skills & Abilities
  • Basic IT skills
  • Ability to work effectively under direct supervision, as part of the multi‑disciplinary team
  • Ability to communicate with members of the public and health care providers
  • Ability to meet basic care needs of patients – washing, dressing and assistance with feeding etc.
  • Competent in physical skills e.g. recording ECGs, recording blood glucose etc.
