Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and flexible Clinical Scientist experienced in Nuclear Medicine to join our multidisciplinary team at Newcastle Hospitals for a fixed term maternity leave cover post until January 2027. The successful applicant will help provide scientific and clinical support to our comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services.

We are a large department of nearly 50 staff, including clinical scientists, clinical technologists, consultant radiologists, nurses and clerical staff. We work across two major hospitals, RVI and Freeman Hospital, and carry out around 18,000 procedures per year.

We are active in research and provide support to Newcastle University PET/MR imaging and an external provider static PET‑CT service, including support for accreditation for clinical trials. Our team also plays a lead role in the provision of teaching for the MSc course in Medical Physics, Newcastle being one of only 3 accredited teaching centres in England.

Role Responsibilities
  • Working towards certification as a Medical Physics Expert
  • Providing scientific support for the diagnostic and therapeutic services within Nuclear medicine
  • Helping to develop new and existing services, using published guidance, best practice and response to clinical need
  • Performing quality control and commissioning of nuclear medicine equipment
  • Problem solving and providing recommendations after appropriate investigation and analysis
  • Talking with patients about their procedures, radiation risks and advising them of radiation protection restrictions in accessible language
  • Involved in teaching, training, lecturing and/or supervision of trainees, MSc students and other NHS staff as required
  • Involved in audit, research and development
  • Writing reports and presenting findings
  • Perform a range of advanced healthcare science activities, principally within the area of nuclear medicine
  • Provide highly specialist advice and training to staff within own area and other professionals
  • Actively involved in data collection, research and development projects
  • Supervise and train less experienced staff and trainees
