Location: Newcastle upon Tyne

Job Summary

Full‑time permanent Band 6 specialist dietitian in diabetes within the community dietetics service of Newcastle Hospitals. The position is based at the Newcastle Diabetes Centre (Freeman Hospital) with regular clinical work with the Diabetes Specialist Midwifery team at the Royal Victoria Infirmary. The role involves comprehensive outpatient care for Type1 and complex Type2 diabetes, including GLP‑1 therapy, insulin pump therapy, glucose monitoring systems and structured education programmes.

Interest in maternal health and experience with gestational diabetes is highly desirable.

Key Responsibilities
  • Organise and deliver a high‑quality dietetic service to patients at the Newcastle Diabetes Centre and the Royal Victoria Infirmary.
  • Maintain high standards of record keeping and professionalism in line with HCPC standards.
  • Provide individual and group education, using face‑to‑face and telephone modes, in diabetes management and behavioural change (e.g., motivational interviewing).
  • Deliver education and training programmes for health‑care professionals and dietetic students.
  • Participate in multi‑disciplinary audit, research and service improvement activities.
  • Attend and contribute to MDT, dietetics and clinical governance meetings.
  • Motivate colleagues, champion service‑user safety and dignity, and drive continuous self‑ and service‑improvement.
  • Set up community rooms for education sessions, arrange bariatric chairs and scale placement, and manage teaching resources.
  • Use electronic patient records (Systm1) and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Provide transport to multiple sites across Newcastle; a valid UK driving licence is required.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) Registered Dietitian.
  • Degree in Dietetics or a Science/Nutrition Degree plus a postgraduate Diploma in Dietetics.
  • Evidence of specialist training through short courses or a validated qualification in one or more specialist areas of dietetics (e.g., nutrition support, paediatrics, home enteral feeding).
  • Basic training in counselling and/or motivational interviewing or cognitive behavioural therapy.
  • Basic food hygiene skills.
  • Experience and interest in conducting audits, research and CPD activities.
  • Proficient use of electronic patient records, Microsoft Office and basic keyboard skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a multi‑disciplinary team.
  • Valid UK driving licence and willingness to travel to multiple sites.
  • Optionally: non‑medical prescribing (V300) or teaching certificate.
Working Arrangements

Flexible working hours are supported. A mobile kit (laptop, mobile phone) is provided to enable remote and on‑site service delivery.
