The Senior Medical Photographer provides expert ophthalmic imaging essential for accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management of eye conditions. The role combines advanced clinical imaging, staff leadership, service development, and participation in research activity across multiple hospital sites.
Main duties of the jobThe post holder ensures the delivery of a high-quality, safe, and efficient imaging service, acting as a technical specialist, team leader, and professional role model.
To act as an assessor/mentor to the medical photographers, contributing to the development and delivery of specific training programmes
Photography will primarily be used for patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment, research, teaching and publication.
To provide valuable clinical imaging/information that will be used for virtual evaluation of patients and planning of the patient's care pathway
Accountable for the Ophthalmology Photography Department's team, finances and physical resources.
To work with the manufacturers to maintain the efficiency and clinical effectiveness of imaging systems.

Report patient safety incidents in accordance with Trust policy and contribute to the investigation and learning process, including participation in Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) reviews relating to medical photography and imaging services where appropriate.
Contribute to local quality improvement initiatives, service evaluations and clinical audits, supporting the monitoring, development and continuous improvement of medical photography services.
Ensure compliance with Information Governance, data protection, confidentiality and consent requirements, maintaining the secure management, storage and transfer of clinical images and patient information in line with Trust policies and national standards.
Promote a culture of quality, safety and continuous improvement by identifying risks, sharing learning and supporting the implementation of service improvements within the department.

PersonSpecification Qualifications & Education
- BSc in Medical Illustration or equivalent qualification / experience
- Registered Medical Illustrator Practitioner
- Membership of the Ophthalmic Imaging Association
- Experience as a Medical Photographer with specialist knowledge / experience, and theoretical understanding (post grad level) of Medical, Ophthalmic and General Photography enhanced by CPD and relevant courses
- Relevant / recent clinical ophthalmic imaging experience
- High proficiency in digital imaging, DSLR systems, and image-editing software
- Experience of line management of staff
- Knowledge of Trust policies and routines
- Leading a service
- Ability to perform Ophthalmic imaging including Fluorescein Fundus Angiography, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT),…
