Underwriter
Location: Newcastle upon Tyne
We’re representing a specialist insurance business focused on latent defects insurance (LDI) and structural warranty risks within the UK construction market.
The business has an established track record in this niche and has recently acquired an MGA. They are now building an underwriting capability in a measured, well-funded way, with a clear plan to grow the book and broaden their services within LDI and structural warranty over time.
This is not a replacement role. It’s an early, senior appointment and a key hire.
If you’re an experienced Senior Underwriter in latent defects or structural warranty, this is an opportunity to step into a role where your judgement, experience and approach will genuinely shape how the underwriting function develops.
What this role offers youThis is designed for underwriters who already have credibility in the market and are selective about their next move.
You may be well looked after where you are. You may have long tenure. You’re unlikely to be looking for a job title or a short-term jump.
What this role offers instead is:- A senior underwriting position focused on complex latent defects and structural warranty risks
- Involvement at an early stage, with real input into underwriting appetite, approach and portfolio direction
- A business that understands this class of business and is investing for the long term, not chasing volume
- The chance to work on larger, technically demanding cases as standard
- A clear path to broaden your role over time – whether that’s leadership, portfolio oversight or remaining senior and technical
- There is scope to build and lead an underwriting team as the MGA grows, but this is not a requirement. If you prefer to remain a senior technical underwriter, that is equally valued.
You’ll take responsibility for underwriting latent defects and structural warranty risks, working closely with brokers and construction professionals on cases that require proper analysis and judgement.
Your remit will include:- Underwriting LDI and structural warranty risks
, typically complex and non-standard in nature - Helping to define underwriting guidelines, appetite and pricing approaches
- Contributing to portfolio management and performance, rather than focusing purely on individual cases
- Building strong, professional relationships with brokers and key counter parties
- Playing a visible role in the continued development of the MGA’s underwriting capability
You’ll be supported by strong infrastructure and A-rated paper
, with the freedom to underwrite properly rather than to formula.
- Proven experience underwriting latent defects insurance and/or structural warranty
- A strong technical understanding of construction risks and policy wordings in this space
- A considered, risk-aware underwriting style
- The confidence to operate at a senior level with brokers and stakeholders
- Formal qualifications such as ACII are welcomed but not essential. Depth of experience and judgement matter more.
- Salary up to £80,000 (flexible for the right individual)
- Bonus up to 20% of salary
- 30 days’ annual leave
- Private medical insurance
- Free gym membership
- Pension and additional benefits
- Remote, hybrid or office-based working available
