Salary: From £28,000 - £35,000 (dependent on experience) + annual bonus & benefits.
Work Level: 1, Permanent
Location: Newcastle, hybrid*
Training / Office Attendance: 6 weeks of office‑based training Monday to Friday 09:00‑17:00. After competency, hybrid working possible.

Role OverviewAt Tesco Insurance, our Claims team helps customers through difficult moments. The Claims Handler – Settlements will proactively manage and settle a portfolio of claims efficiently and economically, ensuring high service standards to customers and stakeholders.
Responsibilities- Ensure claims are handled and settled efficiently and correctly, in line with policy cover and legal liability.
- Handle claim queries regarding policy cover, status, exclusions, and excesses, escalating complex queries when needed.
- Maintain accuracy of reserves, file status, recoveries, and diary management.
- Investigate claims to confirm liability before payments are made.
- Negotiate to control costs, including liability decisions and cost recovery.
- Identify and report potential fraud, taking appropriate action.
- Negotiate settlements with stakeholders and suppliers for fair outcomes.
- Build rapport with customers, using varied communication approaches to manage situations.
- Ensure compliance with FCA and Data Protection regulations.
- Manage customer complaints proactively, escalating serious cases to Team Leader.
- In‑depth knowledge of insurance principles: indemnity, subrogation, vehicle and property damage claims.
- Ability to prioritize and manage caseload independently with good planning and organization.
- Commercial judgement and logical decision‑making for claims decisions.
- Knowledge of vehicle/property damage, key case law, industry protocols, Road Traffic Act.
- Knowledge of motor claims fraud types (fire, theft) and proven investigation skills.
- Robust computer literacy and proficiency navigating IT systems.
- Excellent communication with various stakeholders.
- Ownership of decisions within established authority limits.
- Empathy in difficult situations, maintaining a sensitive and caring approach.
- Strong verbal and written communication, simplifying complex information.
- Proven negotiation skills and solution identification for customers and company.
