About Us

Newcastle City Council is committed to making the city cleaner, greener and safer for everyone who lives, works and visits here. Local Services and Waste Management is based in the vibrant west end of Newcastle, with excellent transport links to the depot.

Our professional and dedicated workforce delivers some of the Council's most visible frontline services. From waste and recycling collections to street cleansing and environmental enforcement, our teams take pride in providing excellent services to residents and businesses every day.

We currently collect general waste, recycling and, where subscribed to, garden waste and bulky household items. We also provide a commercial waste and recycling service for businesses across the city.

In addition, we are preparing for the rollout of a new citywide food waste collection service, which will form a significant part of our future waste strategy and contribute to increasing recycling rates and reducing environmental impact.

Each year, our crews empty almost 8 million bins from more than 137,000 domestic properties through alternating weekly collections. Teams also repair, replace and deliver bins to both household and commercial customers.

We welcome thousands of residents to our three Household Waste and Recycling Centres across the city and work closely with communities through our Waste and Recycling Engagement Team, promoting sustainable waste management and encouraging residents to recycle more.

Alongside waste services, our Local Services teams work hard to keep Newcastle looking its best. They clean public spaces, respond to reports of litter, graffiti and fly-tipping on Council land, and maintain and empty public litter bins across the city.

Local Services is a progressive and ambitious division that is committed to continuous improvement, innovation and workforce development. We actively support apprenticeships, training and career progression opportunities for our employees.
