Senior Sister/Charge Nurse – Emergency Department

Job SummaryWe are inviting applications for two Band 7 Senior Sisters / Charge Nurses to lead and manage the Emergency Department at Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
The role requires strong clinical and professional leadership in a high‑volume Emergency and Major Trauma Centre. The post holder will deliver safe and effective patient‑centred care, manage complex clinical environments, support staff development and drive service improvement and operational delivery.
Key Responsibilities- Provide clinical, professional and managerial leadership within the Emergency Department.
- Act as a visible senior nurse, promoting high standards of care, patient safety and experience.
- Lead and coordinate teams to ensure effective patient flow, escalation and operational delivery.
- Take responsibility for shift coordination, staffing, risk management and incident response.
- Support and develop nursing staff through appraisal, supervision and education.
- Collaborate with matrons, consultants and senior leaders across the Trust.
- Contribute to quality improvement, audit, governance and service transformation initiatives.
- Act as a role model for Trust values, professional behaviour and inclusive leadership.
- Work flexibly across a 24/7 rota, including nights, weekends and Bank Holidays.
- Registered Nurse (Adult) with current NMC registration.
- Experience in Emergency Department nursing with strong clinical credibility.
- Leadership experience managing a nursing team in a complex acute environment.
- Excellent communication, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
- Ability to prioritise under pressure, manage complex situations and inspire confidence.
- Experience with clinical risk, incident management and operational pressures.
- Commitment to ongoing professional and leadership development.
- Experience in a Major Trauma Centre or tertiary referral setting.
- Additional leadership or management qualification.
- Higher academic qualification such as a Master's degree.
Full‑time and part‑time posts available – 12 months from date of appointment.
