SHESQ Assurance Engineer – Overhead Lines

We are looking for a highly motivated SHESQ Assurance Engineer to support the delivery of Safety, Health, Environment, Sustainability and Quality (SHESQ) assurance activities across our Overhead Lines (OHL) business. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing, implementing, coordinating, delivering and monitoring SHESQ assurance activities, ensuring compliance with all relevant legislation, National Grid policies, procedures and technical specifications. Working closely with operational teams, engineers, contractors and other stakeholders, you will play a vital role in driving continuous improvement, maintaining high standards of quality, and promoting a strong culture of safety and compliance.

No two days are the same. You'll travel to a variety of OHL sites across the North of England, including Preston, Leeds, Newcastle and Nottingham, working alongside project teams and key stakeholders to ensure that everything from tools and PPE to site demarcation and lifting equipment meets the required safety and compliance standards. We also encourage a hybrid approach to working and are happy to discuss any additional flexibility or working arrangements that would help make this role work for you.

What

You’ll Do
  • Lead and coordinate SHESQ assurance activities across Overhead Line (OHL) projects, ensuring compliance with legislation, company policies, procedures and technical standards.
  • Monitor and review quality assurance and quality control activities undertaken by internal teams and contractors, driving consistent delivery against Quality Management System (QMS) requirements.
  • Conduct audits, inspections and compliance reviews across OHL sites, supporting internal and external audit programmes and ensuring corrective actions are effectively implemented.
  • Develop, maintain and report on regional quality performance, including compliance dashboards, defect tracking, non-conformity registers and monthly SHESQ reports.
  • Support the development, implementation and continuous improvement of SHESQ management systems, Project Quality Plans (PQPs), Site Quality Plans (SQPs) and annual assurance plans.
  • Analyse SHESQ data, investigate compliance issues and identify trends, lessons learned and best practices to improve operational performance and project delivery.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, operational teams and contractors to promote a positive safety culture, improve quality standards and drive continuous improvement across the region.
What You’ll Have
  • Strong planning, organisation and communication skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver high‑quality outcomes.
  • Good knowledge of operational policies, procedures and processes, with an understanding of Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality (SHEQ) requirements and relevant legislation.
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship management skills, with the confidence to influence and collaborate across all levels of the business.
  • A proactive and self‑sufficient approach to problem‑solving, demonstrating initiative and sound judgement in resolving day‑to‑day challenges.
  • The ability to work in a structured, calm and methodical manner, maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong IT skills, including experience using Microsoft Office applications such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint.
  • An industry‑recognised NVQ Level 3 qualification and a willingness to continuously develop professional SHEQ knowledge and expertise.
