The Role

The Direct Works Team are looking for an experienced & reliable Maintenance Electrician to join their dynamic team in day-to-day maintenance accross the University.

Based within the Estates & Facilites Service you will undertake a variety of Electrical maintenance and installation tasks, as well as supporting other Estates & Facilities (E&F) teams and trades as required.

The team has responsibility for the safe, efficient and effective development and management of the University academic and residential estate. The estate is seen as a strategic enabler in support of the University Vision and Strategy.

The role is to provide a high quality and customer focused maintenance and installation service to the University. The role will be carried out in support of academic, commercial, residential and other University activities.

You should be qualified to City and Guilds Advanced standard, NVQ level 3 or equivalent and/or have served a recognized apprenticeship or undergone modern training to an equivalent standard. Working as part of the Maintenance team you will be carrying out efficient, effective repairs and planned preventative maintenance on all types of Electrical plant and equipment.

There are physical elements of this role including working at height and confined spaces. Newcastle University campus is vast, covering 50-acres with more than 100 buildings, to enable you to undertake this role a works vehicle will be provided when required , it is therefore essential you hold a UK driving licence.

The successful applicant will be required to join our 24hr emergency on call rota, and may occasionally be required to work evening or weekends.

Key Accountabilities
  • To carry out a wide range of trade related duties in order to improve the estate infrastructure. This will include but not be limited to Electrical Building Services both internal and external, such as lighting and power distribution, heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems, fire alarm systems and building control systems
  • To carry out Planned Preventive Maintenance (PPM) and defect repairs, both routine and emergency to all elements of electrical building services and equipment, including any appropriate mandatory inspection and testing. Carry out minor installation and improvement works throughout the University’s properties
  • Organise personal workloads and supervise any Maintenance Assistants, Apprentices or other staff members who may have been assiged to them as a team. Arrange and gain access to any area of the University in order to carry ou the timely repair of defects including the requisition of any required spare parts
  • Take responsibility for the production and issuing of appropriate test and inspection certificates in accordance with legislative requirements and the requirements of the appropriate bodies e.g. The National Association of Professional Inspections & Testers (NAPIT)
  • Develop solutions to problems relating to electrical services systems, carry out a diagnostic approach using the Building Energy Management System where appropriate. The post holder will be expected to carry out minor mechanical works relating to the electrical serivces,this will require the application of technical knowledge and the use of innovative and imaginative thinking
  • Carry out isolation of electrical building services, issue isolation certiifcates and “Permits to Work” (where appropriate) to contractors to ensure their safety.
