Lead Back End Engineer

Location: Newcastle upon Tyne

We’re looking for a Lead Backend Engineer to take ownership of backend engineering and help shape the technical future of a fast-scaling SaaS business. You’ll set the vision, guide architecture, and raise engineering standards, while still staying hands-on with critical systems. Some of the responsibilities:
Define and evolve backend architecture to ensure scalability, maintainability, and performance.

Set coding standards and champion secure development practices (e.g. OWASP).Influence technology choices, frameworks, and tools to support engineering excellence.

Oversee improvements to CI/CD pipelines, build processes, and operational workflows.

Clearly and confidently articulate technical risks to non-technical stakeholders.

Lead projects and features to successful outcomes, balancing technical debt, system design, and business needs.

Contribute to key backend systems when your expertise is needed.

Review and refine critical code, ensuring architectural alignment.

Provide technical oversight for major initiatives.

Coach and mentor engineers, raising capability across the backend discipline.

Facilitate design discussions, code reviews, and collaborative problem-solving sessions.

Build consensus for architectural and technical decisions across teams.

Identify and resolve technical debt.

Introduce new backend technologies and approaches that improve reliability and delivery speed.

Promote engineering practices that support scalability, security, and maintainability.

Stay up to date with technology trends and contribute to engineering strategy.

Share knowledge through presentations, workshops, and forums.

Support recruitment by assessing candidates and promoting a strong engineering culture.

Ensure backend systems comply with standards such as ISO
27001 and PCI.Some of the requirements:

Strong backend engineering experience, ideally with Java (11+) and Spring Boot.

Proven ability to design and lead backend architectures for complex systems.

Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS preferred) and container orchestration (Kubernetes).

Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging platforms such as Kafka.

Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed system design.

Knowledge of SQL and No

SQL databases.

Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and modern deployment practices.

Skilled mentor with the ability to influence technical direction across teams.

Strong problem-solving skills, balancing technical, product, and delivery considerations.

Comfortable in agile environments using Git-based SCM and tools like Jira or Redmine.

Awareness of compliance frameworks such as ISO
