Environmental Operative

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic individual to join our Local Services team in delivering a high-quality street cleansing service.

The work is varied, working outdoors, carrying out responsive and programmed cleansing work, such as manual or mechanised street cleaning, removal of fly tipping, emptying litter bins and other similar types of environmental work driving 3.5 ton vehicles and manning a hand barrow when required.

The post is based at Condercum Road but the successful candidate may be asked to work from any of our depots and can cover a range of shift patterns with occasional weekend working so flexibility is essential.

Our Local Services Teams work hard to make sure Newcastle is a place we all want to live in, work in and visit. We clean public areas of rubbish throughout the city. The areas covered include the following:

• streets (including roundabouts, traffic islands, highway verges, service roads and footpaths)
• recycling centres
• paved areas
• car parks
• public open spaces

We inspect the streets and sweep or litter pick as necessary to maintain the standard required by Part IV of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Code of Practice on litter and refuse.

• Respond to reports of litter, graffiti on Council property, and fly‑tipping
• Provide and empty litter bins
• Wash and disinfect areas of the city as required

The candidate will be able to demonstrate their skills against the essential and desirable criteria within the person specification.
