The Transportation Bridge Safety Principal Engineer oversees the coordination of bridge and structure maintenance repairs and oversees our Oversize/Overweight Permit Unit. This incumbent is responsible for coordinating between management, and leadership for bridge maintenance operations, repairs and projects statewide.

- Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff
- Provides staff training and assistance
- Conducts performance evaluations
- Determines priorities and plans section work
- Establishes and maintains section procedures
- Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards
- Acts as liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures
- Prepares reports and correspondence
- Administers and coordinates an effective bridge safety inspection program for all bridges on state highways including both federal aid and state systems
- Acts as specialized consultant in all matters pertaining to design, construction and maintenance of bridges and structures
- Supervises and coordinates work of inspection crews
- Oversees maintenance of bridge inventories and inspection records
- Supervises and conducts training programs for bridge inspectors and reviews performance
- Prepares detailed manuals on inspection procedures for staff and district personnel
- Oversees review and appraisal of inspection reports
- Assists in determining which bridge repairs can be undertaken by state personnel and which require outside contract
- Evaluates field reports of programs for bridge structure replacement or major repairs
- Provides information to Bridge Design for contract repairs
- Establishes bridge safety and inspection policy
- Interprets federal and state policy and briefs staff
- Represents state on federal and/or state committees and panels
- Acts as liaison with United States Coast Guard and United States Army Engineers for navigation clearances, dredging, fill and submarine cables
- Secures approval for closure of drawbridges for repairs or maintenance
- Resolving problems in relation to bridges or drawbridges and bridge accident cases
- Makes recommendations directly to Commissioner on unsafe bridges and structures
- Performs related duties as required
- Oversees and coordinates operational activities of four Maintenance Districts in area of bridge and structure maintenance
- Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of Bridge Section in Central Office of Maintenance
- Acts as Office of Maintenance liaison between other departmental units and outside agencies and/or officials in all maintenance matters pertaining to state fixed and movable bridges and orphan and adopted town road bridges over railroads
- Prepares reports and correspondence
- Administers and coordinates an effective Bridge Maintenance Inspection Program for all bridges on state highways including both federal aid and state systems
- Assists Transportation Maintenance Administrator in formulation of policies and procedures relating to bridge maintenance operations
- Acts as specialized consultant in all matters pertaining to preventative, scheduled and emergency maintenance of bridges and structures
- Directs preparation and review of bridge repair unit contracts, bridge maintenance equipment rental contracts and recommended project memoranda
- Performs related duties as required
- Considerable knowledge of relevant agency policies and procedures
- Relevant state and federal laws, statutes and regulations
- Principles and practices involved in design, construction and maintenance of bridges and structures
