Job SummaryThe Test and Balance (TAB) Technician ensures optimal performance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in commercial and industrial buildings. This role involves inspecting, testing, adjusting, and balancing air, water, and hydronic systems to meet design specifications, improve energy efficiency, and comply with project requirements. Technicians work independently or as part of a team, delivering accurate reports and recommendations.
Travel is required; per diem and hotel accommodations are provided.
- Conduct field testing and analysis of HVAC systems, including air flow, water flow, pressure, and temperature.
- Adjust and balance systems to achieve optimal performance, ensuring compliance with engineering specifications and project documents.
- Record detailed measurements and observations during testing and prepare comprehensive test and balance reports.
- Develop work plans, recommend corrective actions for system deficiencies, and implement safety protocols on job sites.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and contractors to troubleshoot issues and verify system functionality post‑installation.
- Perform testing on commercial HVAC systems such as air handling units, chillers, boilers, and ductwork.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate’s degree in HVAC, mechanical engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of hands‑on experience in testing, adjusting, and balancing HVAC systems.
- Certification from a recognized body such as the National Environmental Balancing Bureau (NEBB) or Associated Air Balance Council (AABC) is highly desirable.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation for travel to job sites.
- Strong mathematical and analytical skills for interpreting data and performing calculations.
- Proficiency with testing equipment (e.g., manometers, anemometers, flow hoods) and software for data logging and reporting.
- Excellent attention to detail, problem‑solving abilities, and the capacity to work in physically demanding environments.
- Self‑motivated, reliable, and punctual with strong communication skills for documenting findings.
- Knowledge of building codes, energy efficiency standards, and safety regulations (e.g., OSHA).
Hourly rate $20–$40 (varying by experience and certifications such as NEBB or AABC) with significant overtime potential. Matched 401(k), medical coverage, and PTO.
