Position: CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER I

City of Newport Beach

Come join the Community Development Department as an entry‑level Code Enforcement Officer in the Code Enforcement Officer series. Responsibilities include performing the full range of code, zoning, use permit, and water quality enforcement activities.

Selection Components
  • Application Evaluation:
    Recruitment remains open until filled, with the first review on Wednesday, January 21, 2026 or at 150 applications, whichever comes first. Applicants after this first review are not guaranteed consideration.
  • Interviews:
    Tentatively scheduled for the week of February 16, 2026. Passing applicants are placed on an eligibility list for future vacancies.
Schedule

This position will work a 4/10 schedule and requires working nights and weekends.

Career Path

Career path includes:
Code Enforcement Officer II, Senior Code Enforcement Officer, and Code Enforcement Supervisor.

Retirement

The City offers a retirement package and membership in CalPERS. The retirement formula is based on appointment date and membership status. Employees contribute 8% or half the normal cost, whichever is higher, toward the retirement benefit.

Qualifications
  • Experience
    :
    One year responsible work experience enforcing building, zoning, use permits, and related codes. Municipal government code enforcement experience highly desirable.
  • Education
    :
    High school graduation or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, engineering, science, business, or public administration is highly desirable.
  • License
    :
    Valid California driver’s license and acceptable driving record are required for duties that involve operating a vehicle.
  • Certificates
    :
    Possession of Penal Code Section 832 certification within twelve months of hire.
Other Requirements
  • Background review:
    Candidates must successfully complete a thorough review, including fingerprinting by the Newport Beach Police Department. Conviction history will be evaluated; a criminal conviction does not automatically disqualify a candidate.
  • Disaster Service Worker:
    Employees are considered disaster service workers and may be requested to respond in emergencies.
