Job Description

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

The Clinical Nurse II – Med Surg role provides direct patient care in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act to assigned patients on Medical/Surgical units. The nurse collaborates with other disciplines of the health care team to ensure the delivery of safe, timely and appropriate quality patient care. This includes providing physical assessments, nursing interventions, pain management, medication administrations, specimen collection, meeting nutritional needs, and teaching and discharge needs of the patients assigned.

Utilizes the nursing process based on evidence‑based best practices to meet patient care needs. Evaluates and adjusts the nursing care process as necessary with consultation as needed, and confers with the appropriate resource personnel when making ethical/legal/medical dilemma decisions. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additionally, the Clinical Nurse II meets the requirements outlined in the Clinical Ladder program respective to his/her department. The Clinical Nurse II demonstrates a commitment to hospital involvement and professional growth by participating in committees, attending related meetings, and presenting education projects and/or supplemental activities.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Clinical Nurse II’s at Magnet designated facilities only require a BSN or that a BSN program is started within one year of hire date and BSN degree is attained within two years of starting the BSN program.
  • BSN preferred.
  • One year experience in an acute care hospital required.
  • Additional requirements for specific departments are as follows:
    • Cardiac Telemetry:
      Successful completion of Sub-Intensive, Intermediate, Progressive or Critical Care course/experience required. Successful completion of ECG test required. Fulfills mandatory stroke education requirements per certification agency.
    • Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI):
      Experience in cardiac telemetry required.

License Required

Registered Nurse in the State of California - Current and in good standing.

Certifications Required

  • BLS certification prior to clinical rotation.
  • Department specific certification requirements are as follows:
    • Cardiac Telemetry: ACLS required upon hire. Completes annual stroke education per Hoag Hospital guidelines.
    • Heart Valve Clinic and CVOR: BLS and ACLS required upon hire. Completes annual stroke education per Hoag Hospital guidelines.

Certifications Preferred

Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI): PCCN.
