Targeted hiring range: $72,000.00 – $87,000.00 based on experience and education.
General Statement of ResponsibilitiesUnder limited supervision, this position is responsible for performing professional architectural design work, supervising the architectural team, contracting services, and providing architectural oversight for engineering construction projects throughout the city. Reports to the Director of Engineering.
Essential Job FunctionsPerforms complex professional architectural work, including preparing conceptual design plans and specifications for consultants and completing full design and construction documentation. Supervises staff architects, manages employee selection and performance, reviews drawings and specifications, verifies cost estimates, monitors design implementation, ensures code compliance, coordinates with other departments and agencies, attends pre‑bid and construction meetings, processes invoices, conducts studies and special projects such as space planning and structural analysis, and performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge- Architecture – Knowledge of modern methods, principles, construction drawings, specifications, blueprints, Uniform Building Codes, and ADA.
- Project Management – Planning, organizing, and managing resources to achieve project goals.
- Supervision – Leadership techniques, principles, and procedures to assign, schedule, supervise, train, and evaluate staff.
- Computer – Utilizes AutoCAD or related software, as well as word processing and spreadsheets.
- Interpersonal – Develops cooperative relationships with staff and other departments; handles inquiries, complaints, and disputes with customers.
- Judgment/Decision Making – Uses logic and reasoning to evaluate situations and exercise good judgment.
- Communication – Prepare detailed reports, logs, and verbal communication as needed.
- Coordination of Work – Establish and implement effective administrative procedures; organize daily work routine, set priorities, and manage time.
- Supervisory – Perform broad supervisory responsibilities over others.
Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture or Architectural Engineering and 5–7 years of professional architectural work with 2–3 years of supervisory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Requirements- Valid driver’s license with acceptable record.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Architect license from the State of Virginia.
- Light physical effort sedentary to light work.
- Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of light objects (5–10 pounds).
- Extended periods at keyboard or workstation.
- Some tasks require perceiving sounds and visual cues.
- Some tasks require oral communication; essential functions performed without exposure to adverse environmental conditions.
