Job Summary

Position responsible for creating a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of every student; establishing effective rapport with students; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for becoming a responsible citizen in accordance with each pupil’s ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

Essential Duties
  • Instruct students in a program of study that meets stated objectives and provides transfer of knowledge.
  • Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Newport News Public Schools.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; provide individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt curriculum to each student’s needs.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize available instructional time.
  • Guide learning toward achievement of all IEPs, establishing clear objectives for the students.
  • Serve as liaison between classroom and specialty groups.
  • Evaluate academic and social growth of students, prepare report cards, and keep appropriate attendance and record‑keeping activities.
  • Assess student accomplishments regularly, seeking assistance of specialists as needed to provide accurate statements of progress.
  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress.
  • Supervise and monitor student movement; escort students to resources, bathrooms, buses, cafeteria, room changes, and other activities.
  • Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team as appropriate.
  • Administer standardized testing in accordance with division testing practices.
  • Model non‑discriminatory practices in all activities.
Other Duties
  • Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings, and other professional activities.
  • Participate in various student and parent activities occurring in school such as PTA, student clubs, and after‑school activities.
  • Create an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
