Position is responsible for creating a classroom environment to develop competencies, knowledge, and skills in aurally comprehending speaking, reading, and writing a foreign language, in accordance with each student’s ability; to interpret to students the culture of the countries where the language is spoken.
Responsibilities- Teach skills and knowledge in foreign language instruction, utilizing curriculum designated by Newport News Public Schools and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of Newport News Public Schools.
- Develop lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s instructional philosophy and congruent with course/SOL standards.
- Adapt the curriculum to provide individual, small group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student and identified subgroups.
- Develop pupil understanding and appreciation of the culture of countries where the studied language is spoken.
- Evaluate each student’s progress in meeting course standards in comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing the world language.
- Document academic and social growth of students; prepare report cards and keep attendance reports, checklists, census forms, and other records.
- Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Identify student needs and collaborate with other professional staff to assess and help students solve learning, health, and attitude problems.
- Communicate with parents and school counselors regarding student progress.
- Supervise students in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day.
- Participate in faculty committees and student activity sponsorship.
- Administer testing in accordance with division testing practices.
- Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education or related field and meet Virginia Department of Education licensure eligibility requirements to teach a foreign language.
- Eligible or possession of Virginia Collegiate Professional License or Postgraduate Professional License with appropriate endorsement to teach a foreign language.
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the public.
