The Role

Senior Level Structural Engineer (E3) in the A4W Reactor Plant Planning Yard (Department E83). Supports maintenance, overhaul, and modernization of CVN
68 Class aircraft carriers. Leads efforts in ship alteration development, structural foundation design, nuclear lifting and handling, advanced coatings application, and maintenance of nuclear cognizant structures.

Responsibilities
  • Analyze, research, and develop structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design and operation of structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems.
  • Analyze damage tolerance, durability, design allowables, and structural modeling for both non-nuclear and nuclear structural components.
  • Utilize CATIA, IDEAS, Pro Engineer, and other software applications for design and analysis.
  • Provide technical solutions to complex problems requiring ingenuity and creativity.
  • Mentor junior engineers and develop training objectives to support future leadership development.
  • Oversee larger projects and provide direction for less experienced engineers across ship structure, fabrication, welding, non-destructive testing, and nuclear lifting requirements.
Must Have
  • Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program and 5 years of relevant exempt experience.
  • Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Ph.D. and 0 years of experience (qualifies under the ABET requirement).
Nice to Have
  • Significant experience developing nuclear and non-nuclear structural ship alteration products and executing them through maintenance activities.
  • Direct experience with CVN
    68 Class ships, including knowledge of ship arrangements, structural foundation drawings, fabrication, welding, and non‑destructive testing of structural welds.
  • Experience with nuclear lifting and handling requirements, development of component handling procedures, and calculation methodologies.
  • Knowledge of protective coatings, corrosion prevention mechanisms, and nuclear shielding.
  • Strong leadership, project management, communication, and writing skills.
