Role

Analyzes, researches, and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non‑metallic or composite structural materials for product design or operation of product, including structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables, and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis.

Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, Pro Engineer, and a variety of software applications.

This position is for the Submarine Shock Associate Technical Fellow (ATF) E5 to serve as a subject‑matter expert (SME) for submarine shock both internally within NNS and externally within the greater Navy technical community.

The prospective candidate must have a broad understanding and experience in the application of shock principles in the generation, transmission, and mitigation of shock and vibration analysis results. Candidates should understand structure coupling and its effects on shock and vibration mitigation. Expertise in shock analysis methods is required, including transient shock analysis (TSA). Candidates must have extensive knowledge of associated software (ABAQUS, FEMAP, or other specialized commercial or government‑developed analysis software) for shock analysis in all frequency ranges.

Candidates must also have experience relating to analytical processes for shipboard systems, associated structure, foundations, and system components.

The prospective candidate will serve as the company’s technical authority on submarine shock and advanced analytics issues affecting the design and construction of shipboard systems, structures, and associated components. This individual will act as a key technical advisor to management and may serve as the spokesperson when interfacing with the customer on key technical issues. This individual will serve as the company’s representative on related technical conferences and collaborative efforts with both industry and academia.

Additionally, this individual may serve as a consultant to senior management in long‑range company planning efforts concerning new or projected areas of technological research and advancements, particularly in advanced submarine or underwater vehicle design.

Qualifications – Must Have
  • Bachelor’s Degree and 14 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Master’s Degree and 12 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Ph.D. and 9 years of relevant professional experience.
  • Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Qualifications – Nice to Have
  • The ability to provide technically sound solutions for unique or complex problems.
