Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub‑assemblies and components; and quality testing; supports design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems.
Job SummaryThe SSN(X) Platform Mechanical team seeks engineers who will shape critical functions and novel capabilities for the Navy’s next‑generation fast‑attack submarine. The team designs and develops complex mechanical systems across non‑propulsion areas such as payload launch, control surfaces, HVAC, chill water, masts, and others.
Responsibilities- Provide technical leadership for a mechanical system or a team supporting a system.
- Develop innovative design concepts considering functional requirements, future technological capabilities, operational needs, production capabilities, and lessons from legacy systems.
- Coordinate with Navy counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the Navy and working groups.
- Develop and review technical calculations, reports, presentations and other products.
- Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities.
- Strong technical background and knowledge of the engineering and design process for mechanical systems from concept through ship integration.
- Team facilitator and innovator, helping develop and inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to support the development and presentation of technical reports and briefs to NNS leadership or the Navy, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners.
- Bachelor’s Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience.
- Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience.
- Ph.D. and 0 years of relevant experience.
- ABET‑accredited engineering degree.
- Knowledge of submarine mechanical systems and interoperability with structural, electrical, and other mechanical systems.
- Understanding of equipment such as hydraulic/electric actuators, linkages/cam‑sliders, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, welded or fastened joints, etc.
- Experience in traditional and computer‑based design and analysis of components.
- Ability to work in and foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of stakeholders.
- Desire for continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment.
