Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to optimize materials for use in engineering design and application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non‑metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties, design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications.
May conduct failure analysis, life predictions, and define requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
Leads junior engineers providing engineering services and troubleshooting for Hull Treatment manufacture and installations at NNS and off‑site. Communicates with internal and external customers (Electric Boat, Navy, suppliers) via email, phone and meetings. Supports off‑shift/weekend duties, short domestic travel. Maintains DOD Secret clearance.
Qualifications- Must Have: Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; or Master’s degree and 3 years of relevant experience; or Ph.D. with zero years of experience.
- Nice to Have: Experience in hull treatments; ability to communicate with internal and external customers and suppliers; MS Office Suite, AutoCAD proficiency; a balanced mix of office, shop and production environment exposure.
