Applies electrical, electronic and mechanical principles to components and systems, including assembly, analysis, and documentation of results; construction of developmental assemblies, sub-assemblies and components; and quality testing. Supports and participates in the design, test, modification, fabrication and assembly of prototype electromechanical systems. The SSN(X) Platform Mechanical team is seeking technically strong and motivated engineers to join a diverse, dynamic and dedicated team.
As a member you’ll have the once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape critical functions and novel capabilities for the Navy’s next generation fast attack submarine.
- Provide technical leadership for a mechanical system or over a team supporting a system
- Develop innovative new design concepts considering functional requirements, future technological capabilities, operational needs, production capabilities, and lessons from legacy systems
- Coordinate with Navy counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the Navy and working groups
- Develop and review technical calculations, reports, presentations and other products
- Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities
- Strong technical background and knowledge of the engineering and design process related to mechanical systems from concept stage through ship integration
- Team facilitator and innovator, helping to develop and inspire creative solutions to challenging design goals
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the development and presentation of technical reports and briefs to NNS leadership or the Navy, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners
- Knowledge of submarine mechanical systems and how they interface with structural, electrical, and other mechanical systems
- An understanding of an array of mechanical products, such as hydraulic and electric actuators, linkages/cam‑sliders, pumps and valves, HVAC systems, structural weldments, welded or fastened joints, and others
- Experience in traditional and computer‑based methodologies for the design and analysis of components
- The ability to work in and foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture within a diverse set of team members and stakeholders
- Exhibit a desire for continuous learning and development in a dynamic environment
- Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience
- Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience
- Ph.D. and 0 years of experience
- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
