Performs technical planning, system integration, verification and validation, cost and risk, and supportability and effectiveness analyses for total systems. Analyses are performed at all levels of total system product to include: concept, design, fabrication, test, installation, operation, maintenance and disposal. Ensures the logical and systematic conversion of customer or product requirements into total systems solutions that acknowledge technical, schedule, and cost constraints.
Performs functional analysis, timeline analysis, detail trade studies, requirements allocation and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.
The SSN(X) Platform Mechanical team is seeking a highly skilled and experienced system engineer to join our diverse, dynamic and dedicated team of engineers. As a member of our team you’ll have the once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape critical functions and novel capabilities for the Navy’s next generation fast attack submarine. The mechanical team is responsible for the concept design, development, and execution of complex mechanical systems across the non-propulsion areas of the submarine, including payload launch and recovery, control surfaces, HVAC, chill water, masts, and many others.
You will team with the Navy and industry to develop these systems, molding what will become the world’s most advanced and capable submarine.
- Support system integration across multiple systems and disciplines
- Coordinate with the digital engineering team in the execution of model based engineering for mechanical systems
- Support the development of processes, tools, and other products necessary for program execution
- Support the development and re-envisioning of ship specifications
- Coordinate with Navy counterparts and conduct periodic briefs to the Navy and working groups
- Oversee the work of supporting team members and review technical products
- Travel periodically to naval bases/facilities, vendors, conferences, or other NNS facilities
- Strong technical background with a comprehensive knowledge of ship systems and components across the platform
- Strong team collaborator and coordinator, helping to integrate multiple teams with diverse backgrounds
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the development and presentation of technical reports and briefs to NNS leadership or the Navy, and coordinating with vendors and industry partners
- Bachelor’s Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience
- Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience
- Ph.D. and 4 years of experience
- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program
