Analyzes, researches, designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic, non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes. Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications.
Material analyses may include failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
This position is intended for the VCS Hull Treatment group in the Coatings Technology and Material Engineering Department. The incumbent will perform engineering services and troubleshooting for Hull Treatment installations at NNS and off-site. This position will require effective communication with Internal and External customers (Electric Boat, Navy, and Suppliers). The incumbent must be able and willing to work in an industrial environment and occasionally support off‑shift and/or weekend duties.
MustHave
Bachelor's Degree and 0 years of relevant exempt experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have- Able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance
- Willing to work primarily on the deckplate in a troubleshooting role (industrial worksite)
- Able to relate theory based engineering with practicality
- Experience with hand tools and small machinery
- Experience working in an industrial environment is a plus
- Effective communication skills, including technical writing
