JOB SUMMARY
A Master Ship fitter has approximately five (5) or more years of experience fitting and assembling structural metal components with precision and adherence to safety and quality standards. This role may serve as a lead mechanic on projects involving up to ten (10) trade personnel. The position requires flexibility to work extended hours, including nights and weekends, as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Positions, aligns, fits, and welds parts to form complete units or subunits, following blueprints and layout specifications, and using jigs, welding torches, and hand toolsVerifies conformance of work pieces to specifications, using squares, rulers, and measuring tapesTack-welds fitted parts togetherLays out and examines metal stock or work pieces to be processed to ensure that specifications are metAligns and fits parts according to specifications, using jacks, turnbuckles, wedges, drift pins, pry bars, and hammersLocates and marks workpiece bending and cutting lines, allowing for stock thickness, machine and welding shrinkage, and other component specificationsPositions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolt parts in position for welding or rivetingStudies engineering drawings and blueprints to determine materials requirements and task sequencesMoves parts into position, manually or with hoists or cranesSets up and operates fabricating machines, such as brakes, rolls, shears, flame cutters, grinders, and drill presses, to bend, cut, form, punch, drill, or otherwise form and assemble metal componentsPerforms other duties as assignedKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Measures, templates, cuts, grinds components for foundations and other structural membersExpert use of material to prevent wasteExpert use of cutting equipment (Plasma Cutter and Oxy/Fuel Torch)Expert reading, interpreting of blueprints (successful identification of material types, parts, references, applicable views/details)Expert use of temporary attachmentsExpert understanding of weld joint design (full and partial penetration welds, chamfers, and bevels)Expert skill in installation and removal of fasteners and rivetsCorrectly identifies base material types and thicknessesExpert level tack welder in common shipboard positions (overhead, vertical, horizontal)Expert tack welding in uncommon/ limited access positions (mirror, confined, heavy interferences)Qualified in multiple processes and metal types (FCAW, SMAW, CRES, ALUM)Must demonstrate the ability to mentor, coach, and support subordinate mechanics in skill development and task execution.Expert knowledge of erect and set principlesExpert understanding of material fabricationRecognizes tooling needs (Which tool to use for which application)Self‑Motivated, able to solve job issues without need for Supervisory approvalTrains, motivates, and drives production of less skilled employeesAbility to read fit up/alignments measuring devices (rulers/tape, levels, bobs, squares, etc.)Expert use of power tools (grinders, reciprocating saws, drills etc.)Expert use of hand tools (hammers, punches, clamps, etc.)Correct set up of tools prior to use (running lines, drop tests, etc.)Expert knowledge of power tool safety, (correctly identifying kick direction & pinch points)Expert use of positioning equipment (dogs/wedges, rams, saddles)Expert knowledge of shipbuilding standards (009‑12, W1689, Preheat/Interpass)Expert knowledge of inspection standards (009‑25, 009‑06)Adheres to fire safety principles (hot work tickets, positioning firewatches, 35' rule, etc.)Ability to instruct others to navigate onboard vessels to find work areas/backsides of work areasExpert knowledge of industry safety standards/trainingAdheres to industry safety standardsRequires no supervision/oversight to accomplish workJOB REQUIREMENTS QUALIFICATIONS
