University Police Chief
Join Inside Higher Ed to lead the University Police Department at Christopher Newport University. This full‑time exempt position requires a criminal background check and a fingerprint‑based history verification.
Chief ObjectivesThe Chief provides strategic leadership for a 24/7 police department of 36 sworn officers and security personnel. Responsibilities include ensuring compliance with state/federal regulations, cultivating a secure inclusive campus environment, and building collaborative partnerships with university stakeholders. The role is a Campus Security Authority (CSA) and a designated position for emergency closing.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership & Administration:
Vision, direction, recruitment, training, policy development, budget oversight, operational effectiveness. - Operations:
Patrol, investigations, crime prevention, emergency communications, uniformed patrol, equipment readiness. - Education & Training:
Professional development, de‑escalation, trauma‑informed practices, law‑compliance training. - Community Engagement:
Community policing initiatives, outreach, partnership with Campus Violence Prevention Committee, Threat Assessment Team, external law‑enforcement agencies. - Reporting & Compliance:
Clery Act, Title IX, VAWA, FERPA, Virginia DCJS, annual security reports, crime statistics. - Administrative Duties:
Open to other duties as assigned, student and staff support, safety operations, background checks, security authority functions.
Required Education
:
Master’s degree related to criminal justice or equivalent; bachelor’s with advanced‑degree experience acceptable. Valid Virginia driver’s license and eligibility for Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services certification.
Experience
:
Supervisory experience; significant administration of a comprehensive security program at university, municipal or state level. Proven policing experience, financial budget management, sexual assault victim support, Threat Assessment Team involvement.

Starting at $135,350, commensurate with education and experience. Health, dental, vision, retirement and other benefits consistent with Christopher Newport University campus compensation.
