HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) division is the largest industrial employer in Virginia and the sole designer, builder and refueler of U.S. Navy nuclear aircraft carriers and one of two providers of U.S. Navy nuclear submarines. With a 135‑year history, NNS brings together skilled tradespeople, engineers, project managers, software developers and many other professionals to produce the world’s most powerful naval ships.

We welcome all who wish to join our diverse and innovative team.

The Role

This posting is for recent or upcoming 2026 high‑school graduates. Newport News Shipbuilding offers a $500 sign‑on bonus and a $500 relocation bonus to new hires who live 50 miles or more from Newport News, VA. Current NNS employees are ineligible for the sign‑on bonus. The position is for candidates with no trade experience who can complete a two‑week, unpaid Deck Electrician training program, or for those who already hold a certificate in a related trade.

We partner with the Virginia Ship Repair Association, local community colleges and maritime training facilities to offer a Marine Trades Training (MTT) program. The Deck Electrician Trainee program runs once a month at Virginia Peninsula Community College (Hampton, VA) and consists of 80 hours of instruction from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday‑Friday. Candidates who provide a certificate or diploma in electrical or a directly related field (e.g., commercial, residential, industrial, aviation electrical, renewable energy, generator installation, appliance repair) may be exempt from the trainee program.

  • Install, repair, overhaul, and test electrical systems on aircraft carriers and submarines.
  • Read and interpret electrical schematics and blueprints.
  • Conduct lighting, receptacle, wireway rack, and electronic control installations.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, equipment rebuilding, and welding of studs.
  • Work safely in various weather conditions, at extreme heights on scaffolding or ladders, and in confined spaces such as tanks or compartments.
  • Follow all health, safety, and environmental procedures.
Must Have
  • Ability to complete the 2‑week (80‑hour) unpaid training program or provide one or more certificates of completion or diploma in electrical or a directly related field.
  • Willingness to undergo a background investigation and drug screen.
  • Ability to pass a physical agility test.

  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Must be clean‑shaven to wear a respirator.
  • Prepared to work outdoors year‑round, in all weather conditions.

  • Open to any shift.
