Job Description & How to Apply Below

More than a job. A calling to serve community, people, and place
.

We're Better Together - Team Newport United

Our parks are where community happens - where families gather, children play, visitors explore, and neighbors find connection. This role exists to protect and enhance those shared spaces, and to lead the people who care for them every day.

This role plays a key part in guiding a highly committed Parks Maintenance team and shaping the next chapter of their work. We are seeking a leader who is deeply engaged, people-centered, and committed to mentoring staff while remaining closely connected to the day-to-day work and the people behind it.

If you believe leadership means service, and if you can balance operational excellence with compassion - this may be the role you’ve been called to.

Applications received by Friday, January 16, 2026, will receive first consideration. The position will remain open until filled.

About the Role

The Parks Maintenance Supervisor plans, organizes, and oversees the staff and daily operations of landscape specialists, park maintenance crews, and custodial teams. Together, you will ensure City-owned parks, public spaces, street medians, and restroom facilities are safe, clean, welcoming, and accessible for all who live in and visit our community.

This position blends hands‑on leadership with long‑range planning and requires someone who can navigate both the beauty of park stewardship and the realities of public‑facing challenges such as graffiti, vandalism, and unsheltered camps – with grace, professionalism, and respect.

This position offers the opportunity to make a visible, lasting impact – on the landscape of the City and on the people who care for it. It is a chance to lead a dedicated team and honor the work that came before by investing deeply in what comes next.

Why Join Us
  • Excellent Health, Dental, and Vision coverage for you and your family
  • Participation in the City’s self‑funded retirement program
  • Access to a robust Employee Wellness Program
  • Free Recreation and Aquatic Center memberships for you and your family
  • Generous paid leave, training, and career development opportunities

For non‑local hires, short‑term housing assistance may be available, including a furnished apartment with a partial rent subsidy for the first three months – just bring your clothes.

What You’ll Do

  • Foster a culture of teamwork, safety, accountability, and pride in public service.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, evaluations, and – when necessary – corrective action in partnership with Human Resources.

Care for Public Spaces

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise maintenance of City parks, landscaped areas, irrigation systems, playgrounds, and public restroom facilities.
  • Evaluate maintenance needs and implement solutions that ensure facilities are safe, clean, and visually welcoming.
  • Coordinate with Facilities Maintenance, Streets, and other departments to share resources and expertise.

Balance Daily Operations and Long‑Term Planning

  • Assign staff, vehicles, equipment, and materials to meet daily and seasonal needs.
  • Plan division services 6-12 months in advance, with detailed monthly and weekly work plans.
  • Prioritize projects, inspect job sites, and ensure quality workmanship and efficient use of resources.

Manage Resources Responsibly

  • Prepare and administer the division budget, monitor expenditures, and conduct cost analysis.
  • Oversee equipment and vehicle maintenance.
  • Maintain records, payroll reporting, certifications, inventories, and work activity reports.

Serve the Community with Compassion

  • Respond to service requests, complaints, and safety concerns with professionalism and empathy.
  • Address sensitive situations such as vandalism or unsheltered camps thoughtfully, balancing public safety, dignity, and City policy.
  • Work within the City’s Volunteer Program to support community clean‑ups, adopt‑a‑park programs, and partnerships with schools and service groups.
