Job Summary:
This recruitment is to fill future part‑time, hourly, intermittent boat operator positions within the Marine Operations unit in the Division of Research and Innovation at Oregon State University. The Small Boat Operations Boat Operator works under the Boating Safety Officer (BSO) to support marine research activities. The role involves vessel operation, launching and retrieval, trailering, general boat and equipment maintenance, and logistical support for small boat operations.
Key ResponsibilitiesVessel Operations and Field Support – 70%
- Operate small research vessels in marine and freshwater environments.
- Trailers, launch and recover vessels using trucks and towing equipment.
- Assist with on‑deck operations including gear deployment, line handling, and routine tasks.
- Make safety and operational assessments based on conditions and equipment readiness.
- Assist in launching, securing, and mooring vessels before and after use.
- Perform basic maintenance and cleaning on small boats, motors, and trailers.
- Conduct inspections and simple repairs with hand and power tools.
- Fuel vessels, check fluids, and monitor engine condition.
- Maintain records of fuel usage, inspections, and minor repairs.
- Store, organize, and inventory boating equipment and supplies.
- Assist in set‑up and break‑down for trainings, field deployments, and safety drills.
- Load and unload gear and supplies for field operations.
- Maintain basic logs of operations, maintenance, and usage.
- Coordinate work of student employees or volunteers on site.
- Communicate with staff, researchers, and students to support day‑to‑day needs of the Small Boat Program.
High School Diploma and 2 years of vessel operations experience, or equivalent education and experience sufficient to perform essential duties.
Licensing / Certifications
- Boater Education Card issued by the State of Oregon or equivalent.
- First Aid and CPR Training.
- Internal evaluation of related skills by OSU Ship Operations staff.
- English language proficiency.
- Basic computer skills (e‑mail, web browsers, word processing).
- Experience supporting marine research or education fieldwork.
- Ability to interpret technical manuals, safety protocols, and environmental data.
- Familiarity with hand tools and basic maintenance of mechanical equipment.

Minimum Requirements
- Valid driver’s license.
- Coast Guard drug‑testing compliance.
- English language proficiency.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in demanding environments.
This role requires driving a university or personal vehicle on behalf of the university; candidates must pass a motor vehicle history check and maintain a valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions / Work Schedule- Frequent outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Physical tasks including loading, trailering, securing equipment, and manual lift of up to 50 lbs.
- Standing, bending, climbing, and walking for extended periods.
- Occasional weekend work and overnight travel as required.
- Operation of large university vehicles including 15‑passenger vans and pickup trucks towing boat trailers.
Hourly rate: $24.99 – $31.63 per hour
Pay period: 16th – 15th of the following month
