The City of Newport is looking for energetic, responsible, and service-minded individuals to join our team as Lifeguard I at the Aquatic Center.
As a Lifeguard, you won’t just be watching the water, you'll be protecting lives, building community trust, and creating a safe and welcoming space for families, kids, and guests of all ages.
Responsibilities- Keep a watchful eye on patrons in and around the pool area.

- Knowledge
:
Basic office equipment, Lifeguard techniques and philosophies, aquatic program rules, swimming instruction, water safety, and general recreation profession objectives. - Skills
:
Adequate swimming and water rescue skills, use of rescue equipment, computer and office equipment proficiency, customer service, interpersonal communication, reasoning and problem‑solving, and dedication to safety protocols. - Abilities
:
Establish and maintain professional relationships with city personnel and the public, effective oral and written communication, confidentiality, rescue skill execution, multitasking, discretion, teamwork, attention to detail, sustained alertness, reliable scheduling, and safety rule compliance.
The position requires frequent sitting, standing, climbing, bending, kneeling, stooping, reaching, and manipulating objects. It demands sustained focus, lifting materials up to 25 pounds routinely, up to 50 pounds occasionally, and rarely more than 100 pounds. Manual dexterity, strength, and coordination are required about 40% of the time to operate AEDs, rescue backboards, lane lines, pool lifts, rope swing, pool vacuums, computers, keyboards, and office equipment.
Movement up an approximately 6‑foot ladder is occasionally necessary. Physical strength, endurance, and visual and hearing acuity are essential for water rescue duties.
- CPR/First Aid certification within 30 days of hire.
- Lifeguard certification within 30 days of hire.
- Knowledge of basic water safety at the time of hire.
- Blood Borne Pathogen training within 30 days of hire.
- Minimum age: 16 years.
Work is primarily indoors in a recreational/swimming pool setting with exposure to humidity, water, and chemicals. Uniform and proper footwear are required while on duty.
