The President, U.S. Naval War College, invites applications for the position of Chair, National Security Affairs Department.

The U.S. Naval War College (NWC) is a Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) institution serving the nation, the Department of Defense, and the U.S. Navy. U.S. and selected international graduates earn Master of Arts degrees in National Security & Strategic Studies or Defense & Strategic Studies accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The National Security Affairs (NSA) department is a graduate school department teaching foreign policy analysis and international security. It provides professional military education to mid- and senior-career students who are military and civilian national security professionals from the United States and more than 60 partner countries. The NSA department offers two courses that lead to the master's degree and Joint Professional Military Education credit:
National Security Decision Making (NSDM) for senior-ranking professionals and Theater Security Decision Making (TSDM) for mid-ranking professionals. These courses provide a broad interdisciplinary foundation in contemporary security studies to analyze how the U.S. government makes foreign policy decisions and the role the U.S. plays in the world. The department is first and foremost a teaching department where scholars and national security practitioners develop and teach a curriculum that combines academic rigor with policy relevance.

To further this, faculty participate in scholarly, policy and professional activities to ensure students have a learning experience that meets the needs of the Navy and the intent of the Joint Professional Military Education system.

Reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs, the Chair leads 22 civilian and 12 military faculty on all aspects of the Department’s operations including:

• Curriculum development
• Academic outreach
• Engagement with the wider civilian and PME academic world
• Faculty recruitment, retention, and development

Meeting with civilian faculty in accordance with the Defense Performance Management Appraisal Program and mentoring faculty to meet college guidelines for promotion and tenure. Additionally, the Chair meets with academic representatives at least twice per term and leads comprehensive curriculum reviews in support of legal and policy requirements. The Chair oversees the preparation, review, management, and execution of the Department’s annual budget, assures faculty meet annual training requirements, and supports faculty development.

On-site daily, the Chair is responsible for working closely with the College’s leadership, fostering and maintaining cooperative relationships with other departments and programs, and encouraging seamless integration across College departments.

The President seeks candidates who are proven academic leaders. An earned doctorate is required in a field relevant to national security such as political science, public policy analysis, international relations, political economy, history, or regional security studies. Strong publication and teaching records are essential. A highly desirable candidate should have team-building skills and experience in developing innovative approaches to curriculum and teaching.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens capable of obtaining and maintaining a Department of Defense security clearance at the SECRET level.
