Overview

English As A Second Language Instructor (Officer – Intermediate Class  #: Class

A) - Naval War College English As A Second Language Classes (ESL Classes) in CONUS - Newport, RI 02841 to support engagement for an academic staff college and "Home of Thought" for the United States Navy located in Naval Station Newport in Newport, Rhode Island. The Naval War College's Mission is to preserve a current and relevant curriculum, a world-class faculty and staff, and the best and brightest joint student body educated both during their time at the college and through a robust alumni program of lifelong learning afterward.

The Pro Sidian Engagement Team Members work to provide English As A Second Language Classes (ESL Classes) focused on English Improvement on behalf of The U.S. Naval War College International Programs Branch. The courses will be at two levels with an Optional 3rd Spouse Course:
1) Officer - Intermediate,
2) Officer - Advanced, and
3) Optional Spouse Course. The advanced level is comparable to university courses for International Teaching Assistants at U.S. Universities. Specifically, Officer courses will be taught with an emphasis on academic preparation for reading and writing. In addition, if funding is available, an Optional course of instruction will be open to officers’ spouses at the beginner level.

Responsibilities
  • Deliver English As A Second Language (ESL) Program Courses at two levels (Officer – Intermediate and Officer – Advanced) and an Optional Spouse Course, focusing on English improvement and academic preparation for reading and writing.
  • Deliver all classes in accordance with Government Furnished Materials provided by the Naval War College and scheduled classrooms (Pringle Hall, Room 360) in Newport, RI.
  • Provide a prepared syllabus for contracted courses to International Programs ahead of the first class.
  • Submit a grade report of "Pass" or "Fail" and maintain weekly attendance reports to International Programs.
  • Assist ESL students with public speaking by providing feedback on practice speeches and addressing recurring grammatical issues.
  • Evaluate student papers as part of the Naval War College Syllabus, offering written feedback on content, syntax, and grammar.
  • Conduct post-instruction questionnaires and produce a final progress report to International Programs.
  • Provide all textbooks and required materials for all courses;
    Pro Sidian Engagement Team materials costs should be based on 15 students per class.

    Newport, RI 02841 – classes in Pringle Hall, Room 360, Fall/Winter and Spring schedule.
  • Benefits:
    None – This is a 1099 Contract Position
  • Typical start time: 12:00 PM EST
  • Typical end time: 04:00 PM EST
  • Schedule:

    Monday to Friday | No weekends | Day shift | 8-hour shift
Additional Responsibilities
  • Develop syllabi, lessons, and assessments focused on English for Academic Purposes across reading, written, oral, and grammar skills.
  • Assess English language needs of individual students and adjust curriculum accordingly.
  • Support student language development through formative and summative assessment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge in written and oral communication and pedagogy for English language learners.
  • Develop and facilitate skill-building programs to engage students and promote critical thinking.
  • Manage and update student records and process end-of-term reporting for ESL students.
  • Collaborate with internal departments to coordinate workshops and instructional programs for students adapting to university life.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree; master’s degree in a related field preferred.
  • Valid Newport, RI teaching license in ESL or equivalent recognized state license.
  • Experience teaching English Language Learners as outlined by the Newport (or other recognized state) Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
  • Experience developing ESL and ELL curricula; college-level teaching experience; proven technical proficiency.
