Operations Shift Engineer

Overview

Operations Shift Engineer at DTE Energy – provides advisory technical support and guidance to the Shift Manager in areas including thermal hydraulics, reactor engineering, and plant analysis to ensure safe plant operation. Assists shift operations personnel in recognizing, diagnosing, and effectively responding to plant transients or other abnormal conditions.

• Act as the Shift Technical Advisor, providing advisory technical support and guidance to the Shift Manager on conditions affecting safe plant operation.
• May assume the Control Room Supervisor position as necessary.
• Review, approve, and return to service maintenance work orders; coordinate activities with maintenance supervision.
• Review, approve, and return to service surveillance, preventive maintenance (PMs), and routines.
• Coordinate activities with other departments for scheduled surveillance, PMs, and routines.
• Establish short- and long-term objectives for plant control and direct personnel to coordinate activities per the plan of the day (POD).
• Provide directions to on-shift personnel from Chemistry, Radiation Protection, Maintenance, Engineering, and Security as required to complete scheduled shift activities.
• Review CARDs generated during the shift and assist in making reportability/operability determinations.
• Monitor performance against station standards, identify gaps, and provide coaching and feedback.
• Oversee major plant evolutions involving important equipment or complex evolutions with potential safety or stability implications.
• Prioritize Operations concerns on the POD and evaluate adds to the operator workaround list.
• Ensure Operations compliance with regulations, Technical Specifications, and administrative controls.
• Participate as a Response team member during unplanned events and prepare reports for senior management.
• Communicate effectively with employees at all levels, both orally and in writing.

• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in engineering, engineering technology, or related sciences and 18 months of nuclear experience OR
• High School diploma or equivalent GED with additional qualifying experience as detailed below:
• For RO Upgrade or Direct SRO: eligibility per INPO ACAD; active RO at Fermi or equivalent experience at a commercial power reactor facility; or 18 months in positions equivalent to reactor operator at a reactor facility; or military reactor equivalent experiences (see original description for specific roles).
• Must obtain and maintain Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license issued by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
• Must meet INPO ACAD eligibility for Direct SRO and for Shift Technical Advisor.
• Completion of INPO Accredited Shift Technical Advisor Training Program.

• Pass NRC medical and physical examination requirements as specified for nuclear power plant personnel requiring operator licenses.
• Must obtain and maintain Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license.
