Site Security, Security Manager
Overview
Mgr Security role at Brown University Health. Reports to the Newport Hospital Director of Operations and manages day‑to‑day operations of the Security Department, ensuring a safe environment for patients, employees, and visitors.
Key Accountabilities- Develop departmental plans, goals, and budgets; prepare monthly variance reports.
- Recruit, hire, train, evaluate, and manage security staff in collaboration with the contracted security company.
- Respond in an armed capacity to all active‑shooter, Code Silver, and other critical incidents; coordinate with Newport Police and other law‑enforcement agencies.
- Implement policies and procedures to improve department efficiency; evaluate performance against established goals.
- Provide orientation for new officers and general hospital orientation for all new employees.
- Participate in committees:
Environment of Care, Emergency Preparedness, External Partner Committee, Diversion Response Team, and Brown Health System‑Wide Workforce Safety Council. - Account for Loss Prevention Program, incident reporting, investigative reports, and monthly incident trend summaries.
- Retrieve and manage security video recordings and the hospital badge access system.
- Coordinate valet parking safety and conduct emergency parking operations, including snow emergencies.
- Respond to Code Gray calls (unarmed) and coordinate intervention teams; provide de‑escalation training.
- Manage the patient valuables/contraband safe, and oversee quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection‑control compliance.
- Work with hospital locksmith and approve requests for duplicate keys.
- Co‑ordinate with Newport Police on protocols regarding armed security presence on campus.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in a security or law‑enforcement related field; computer competency and budget preparation skills;
Incident Command System (ICS) training within 180 days; valid driver’s license; prior health‑care experience preferred.
Psychological evaluation (if requested); maintained good standing after 3 years of service (or retired in good standing due to physical disability excluding psychological impairment); LEOSA card or equivalent R.I. license/permit; semi‑annual firearms proficiency and active‑shooter training; monthly firearms training off‑site;
Hazardous materials and host‑age negotiation training; proof of firearms and active‑shooter certifications; carry approved concealable automatic firearm and OC‑gel while on duty.
Completed Law Enforcement Academy program; at least four years of progressively responsible system security experience, including three years in a supervisory position.
Work Environment andPhysical Requirements
Healthcare setting (acute care hospital, physicians’ offices, ancillary enterprises); able to stand, walk, and observe for long periods; physically capable of restraining patients, running stairs, carrying >50 pounds for 100 feet; irregular or after‑hours shifts; on‑call duty.
Independent ActionFunctions independently per department policies; escalates specific issues to the Director when policy clarification is needed.
Supervisory ResponsibilityUp to 41 full‑time equivalent in‑house or contracted positions in Security and Valet Parking services.
