Overview
State Of Vermont Probation & Parole Officers must be conscientious, self‑motivated individuals with the ability to think on their feet in a fast‑paced environment. You’ll have a strong understanding of ethics and boundaries as well as the ability to communicate and work in a team setting.
Job DutiesPrior corrections, law‑enforcement, or military experience is preferred. The work is performed primarily in an office setting with mandatory field work. Working hours are 7:45 – 4:30 a.m., Monday‑Friday; some after‑hours, weekends, or other scheduling may be required. Successful candidates must attend six weeks of instruction at the Vermont Correctional Academy.

Environmental FactorsWork is performed in a field office, correctional, and community setting and includes frequent interaction with potentially dangerous correctional clients. High stress and some danger of assault may be present. Evening, weekend, and alternating shift duty are required to provide necessary services and supervision. Field travel is necessary and incumbents may be required to provide private means of transportation. Court, community meeting, and Parole Board appearances may be anticipated.
Minimum Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent or higher and at least three (3) years of experience in human services casework such as mental health/addiction counseling, residential treatment center work, juvenile justice, direct service legal work, emergency services, corrections, law enforcement, military, or similar duties.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license.
- Criminal background check will be performed prior to hire. Certain convictions can be disqualifying.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in social work, criminal justice, human services, psychology, or a related field.
• Criminal background investigation per AHS Policy 4.02, including Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, DMV and adult/child abuse registry checks, as appropriate.
• DCP PREA requirements:
Submission of institutional employment information and verification of sexual abuse allegations.
• Conviction history:
Candidates with any felony or more recent misdemeanor conviction must receive a waiver from the Commissioner of Corrections.
