Position: Post Primary Teacher of Home Economics

Job Description

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Responsibilities
  • Professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require in accordance with Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5.
  • Exercise of general professional duties including being employed as a teacher under the reasonable direction of the principal and, if applicable, the board and principal of any school where required to work.
  • Exercise of particular duties with directions reasonably given by the principal or by the board/ principal of any school where required to work.
  • Planning and preparing courses and lessons;
    Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
    Assessing, recording and reporting on development, progress and attainment of pupils.
  • General including promoting the progress and well‑being of pupils, providing advice and guidance on education and future careers, keeping and sharing relevant records, communicating with parents and collaborating with external bodies as approved by the employing authority and Board of Governors; participating in related meetings.
  • Assessment/Reporting including providing or contributing to oral and written assessments, reports and references as appropriate.
  • Staff Development/Professional Development including participation in staff development and performance review, reviewing teaching methods, pursuing further training, and advising on course development and assessment.
  • Discipline/Health and Safety including maintaining order, safeguarding health and safety, and participating in curriculum/administration meetings.
  • Public Examinations including preparation and assessment of pupils for public examinations and related supervision.
  • Management/Administration including involvement in staff appointments, coordination of teachers, curriculum, organisation and pastoral functions; administrative tasks and supervision of support staff and resources; attendance and pupil supervision.
  • Hours of work including 195 days/year and requirements on hours, breaks and conditions for full‑time or term arrangements.
  • Staff cover including arrangements for covering absent teachers as per school policy.
  • Review of the job description to reflect changing circumstances and to provide guideline-based flexibility; promotion of equality and good relations in line with the Northern Ireland Act 1998.

    Qualifications/Professional Membership

    Hold a teaching qualification recognized to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification enabling you to teach Home Economics as the main subject.

    Experience

    Minimum of 3 months demonstrable experience teaching Home Economics at Key Stage 3 to achieve positive learning outcomes; minimum of 3 months experience teaching Food and Nutrition at Key Stage 4; demonstrable experience of using digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.

    Other

    Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post.
