JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

Responsibilities and Duties

This section reflects professional duties and responsibilities for teachers as provided in the original description. It includes:

  • Exercise of general professional duties: a teacher shall carry out professional duties as circumstances may require under reasonable direction of the principal, or, when employed by a board, under reasonable direction of the board and the principal of any school in which they may be required to work.
  • Exercise of particular duties: perform, in accordance with reasonable directions from the principal, or from the board/principal of any school where required to work, such duties as may be assigned.
  • Planning: planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching to pupils as needed; setting and marking work; assessing and reporting on pupil development, progress and attainment.
  • General duties: promote the general progress and well-being of pupils; provide guidance on educational and social matters; make and maintain records; communicate with parents; liaise with external bodies as approved; participate in meetings.
  • Assessment/Reporting: provide or contribute to oral and written assessments, reports and references for pupils.
  • Staff Development/Professional Development: participate in staff development and performance review; review teaching methods and materials; engage in further training and development; advise on courses of study and assessment.
  • Discipline/Health and Safety: maintain order and safety of pupils; participate in curriculum and school administration meetings; other related duties ensuring health and safety.
  • Public Examinations: participate in arrangements for public examinations and related assessments and supervision of examinations.
  • Administration and Management: assist in selection and development of staff, coordinate or manage the work of other teachers, contribute to curriculum, organization and pastoral functions; participate in administrative tasks and manage or supervise support staff and equipment. Attendance at assemblies and pupil attendance duties where applicable.
  • Hours and work arrangement: comply with agreed working days/hours, including breaks, and hours defined by the employing authority; ensure readiness for 195 days per year and related conditions; maintain appropriate breaks as per policy.
  • Staff cover: provide supervision and teaching for pupils when a teacher is unavailable, within the defined guidelines.

The essential criteria are measured at shortlisting and may be further explored during interview/selection. Clearly demonstrate on your application how you meet these criteria.

  • Qualifications/Professional Membership

    Hold a teaching qualification capable of recognition to teach in grant-aided schools in Northern Ireland; hold a degree or equivalent Level 6 qualification prepared to teach Music as the main subject.

  • Experience

    Minimum 1 year demonstrable experience teaching Music at Key Stage 3 and 4 (including teaching practice) with positive learning outcomes; experience of managing and directing school musicals; leading/conducting small music groups; demonstrable use of digital media/technology to enhance teaching and learning.

  • Other

    Be registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up the post.

  • Knowledge

    Knowledge of NI Curriculum; safeguarding and child protection policy/practice; SEND Code of Practice; teaching strategies; IT systems and digital tools; current assessment methods.

    Effective teaching and classroom management; inclusive learning environment; collaborative teamwork; positive relationships with pupils, colleagues, parents, and community; motivation and self-direction.
