Kiosk Attendant, The Barn Bistro Coffee Dock

Location: The Barn Bistro, Newry
Reports to: General Manager

Purpose of the Role

To run the Barn Bistro kiosk independently, serving freshly made hot drinks and sandwiches to a high standard, providing friendly and efficient customer service, and keeping the kiosk clean, safe and well stocked throughout the shift.

About the role

Key Responsibilities

Customer service

  • Greet every customer warmly and serve them promptly, including at busy times.
  • Prepare and serve hot drinks (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, etc.) to the Barn Bistro recipe and quality standards.
  • Prepare, assemble and serve sandwiches and other food items freshly to order or from the display, following portion and presentation guidelines.
  • Answer questions about the menu, ingredients and allergens accurately, and refer to the allergen information whenever unsure.
  • Deal with queries and complaints politely, and elevate to a manager where necessary.

Opening the kiosk (from 8:00am)

  • Open up, switch on and check all equipment (coffee machine, fridges, till, card terminal).
  • Check stock, dates and temperatures, and set up the display and serving area.
  • Complete opening checklists and temperature logs.

Cash handling and sales

  • Operate the till and card terminal accurately and process all sales correctly.
  • Handle cash responsibly, keep the float secure and carry out cash-ups as instructed.
  • Report any discrepancies to management immediately.

Food safety and hygiene

  • Follow HACCP procedures and all food safety, hygiene and allergen policies.
  • Maintain personal hygiene and wear the correct uniform at all times.
  • Record fridge/hot-hold temperatures, cleaning and date-labelling as required.
  • Store and rotate stock correctly (first in, first out) and dispose of out-of-date items.

Cleaning and presentation

  • Keep the kiosk, equipment, counters and surrounding area clean and tidy throughout the shift.
  • Complete cleaning schedules, including coffee machine cleaning and end-of-day deep clean.

Stock and ordering

  • Monitor stock levels of drinks, food, cups and consumables, and report shortages to management in good time.
  • Receive and check deliveries where they fall within the shift.

Closing the kiosk

  • Complete cash-up and secure takings as per procedure.
  • Clean down, restock for the next day and complete closing checklists.
  • Switch off equipment and lock up securely.
Lone Working Responsibilities
  • Work safely and confidently without direct supervision.
  • Follow the lone working procedure, including check-in/check-out arrangements with management.
  • Know the emergency, fire and first aid procedures, and the location of the first aid kit and fire exits.
  • Report any accidents, incidents, near misses or security concerns immediately.
  • Never leave the kiosk unattended or unsecured without following the agreed procedure (e.g. for breaks, locking the till).
  • Contact the manager promptly if unwell, if there is a problem with equipment, or if help is needed.
Person Specification

Essential

  • Friendly, positive and professional manner with customers
  • Reliable, punctual and trustworthy, with a good attendance record
  • Able to work on their own initiative and stay calm under pressure
  • Good communication, numeracy and cash-handling skills
  • Willingness to learn and follow procedures
  • Basic Food Safety/Hygiene certificate (or willingness to complete training)

Desirable

  • Previous experience in a café, kiosk, coffee shop or retail setting
  • Barista experience
  • Knowledge of allergen management
  • First aid training
Working Conditions
  • Shifts fall between 8:00am and 5:00pm, [including weekends/bank holidays as rostered].
  • The role is on your feet for most of the shift, with some lifting of stock.
  • Unpaid/paid breaks as per company policy and applicable employment law, with break cover arranged in advance.
  • Uniform provided.
