The Inventory Specialist focuses on managing the flow and storage of steel materials within a warehouse or manufacturing environment. Key responsibilities include maintaining accurate inventory records, tracking material movement, performing cycle counts, and resolving discrepancies. They also play a role in receiving, storing, and distributing materials, as well as assisting with physical inventory.

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintaining Accurate Inventory Records:
    Tracking and documenting material receipts, transfers, and consumption.

    Perform physical counts (cycle counts), reconciling discrepancies, and updating inventory.
  • Tracking Material Movement:
    Monitoring the movement of steel materials within the facility, ensuring proper storage and handling.
  • Resolving Inventory Discrepancies:
    Investigating and resolving any differences between physical inventory counts and system records, potentially involving research and adjustments.
  • Receiving and Storing Materials:
    Receiving, unloading, inspecting, and properly storing incoming steel materials, verifying accuracy, and documenting everything properly.
  • Optimizing Warehouse/Storage:
    Organizing steel storage areas, ensuring efficient material flow, and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Assisting with Physical Inventories:
    Participating in the annual or periodic physical inventory process, including counting, reconciling, and investigating any discrepancies.
  • Assisting with Returns and Scrap Management:
    Identifying and preparing materials for return to suppliers or managing scrap materials, potentially coordinating with purchasing or operations.
  • Reporting:
    Preparing reports on inventory levels, movement, and discrepancies to inform management and support decision-making.
  • Collaboration:

    Working closely with various internal departments (purchasing, production, sales, logistics, etc.) and potentially external vendors or suppliers to ensure material availability and efficient material flow.
  • Adhering to Regulations:
    Ensuring compliance with industry standards, regulations, and company policies, especially concerning safety.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Inventory Management Software:
    Familiarity with inventory management systems, such as ERP systems.
  • Data Entry and Accuracy:
    Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately enter and manage data.
  • Problem-Solving:
    Identify, address, and resolve issues such as inventory discrepancies, system errors, or delivery delays.
  • Communication

    Skills:

    Effective communication skills to collaborate with other departments and personnel.
  • Inventory Management Expertise:
    Proficiency in inventory software (e.g., IFS, ERP systems), understanding inventory control principles, and familiarity with techniques like Just-In-Time (JIT) inventory.
  • Organizational & Time Management

    Skills:

    Essential for prioritizing tasks, managing multiple projects, and maintaining a well-organized storage area.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Physical Stamina:
    Lifting heavy materials (often up to 50 pounds) and spending long periods standing or operating machinery.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver 50 lbs. without physical restrictions.
  • Must wear appropriate PPE at all times such as safety glasses, welding helmets, hearing protection, gloves and safety toe boots.
  • Able to work in hot and cold environments during summer and winter months.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Relevant

    Experience:

    5+ years in inventory and / or warehousing.
  • Computer

    Skills:

    Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (especially Excel) and inventory management systems.
  • Able to work overtime if needed.
  • MUST be dependable and provide references and good work history.
