YMCA Camp Frank
A. Day, or "CFAD" as many campers and alum call it, is a co‑ed summer overnight camp west of Boston in beautiful East Brookfield, MA. Summer after summer, Camp Frank
A. Day campers bond as a community as they learn how to be more independent and how to contribute to a group. Through physical, social and educational activities, our campers gain self‑reliance, a love for nature and the outdoors, and the development of attitudes and practices that build character and leadership—all amidst the fun of camp fires, bugle calls, canoeing, soccer matches, archery and talent shows.
SUMMARY
The Assistant Camp Director is responsible for helping the Camp Director operate and implement a safe, wholesome and high‑quality program for all attending camp. This position is responsible for carrying out the mission and values of the West Suburban YMCA at Camp Frank
A. Day. Also to assist the Director of Camping Operations with all pre and post‑camp administration work for CFAD.
- Assist with communication projects (new camper welcome packets, recruitment).
- Help with on‑site camp events and projects as needed.
- Camp staff paperwork (collection, recording, submitting to HR, communication with staff).
- Active support of our DEIB statement and putting into practice our commitment to equity, diversity, belonging and inclusion. Continue to think about strategies to support diversity goals of the organization.
- Assist with Board of Health Licensing.
- Assume responsibility for camp program & scheduling overseeing Program Directors and Unit leaders.
- Assist in the planning and implementation of all aspects of staff training.
- Assist with the oversight of the CFAD support staff (office, maintenance, housekeeping, kitchen).
- Director oversight of the CFAD Leadership Team (Unit, Program, Waterfront, LITs, Medical) with the CFAD Director.
- Help with camper recruitment (i.e. camp fairs, home shows).
- Assume full responsibility of summer camp operations when the Camp Director is not present.
- Ensure all staff are following and enforcing all rules as well as fulfilling all expectations and their assigned duties.
- Directly supervise all unit staff and assist them in meeting goals. Evaluate, twice a summer, all program staff. Plan & provide atmosphere of high staff morale.
- Correct and document, as necessary, situations that endanger the emotional or physical safety of any person.
- Routinely evaluate the effectiveness of all programs and staff to meet the mission of the YMCA.
- Serve as a liaison between summer camp at Camp Frank A Day and other programs using camp (i.e. Chickami, other rentals).
- Follow established health and safety standards of the YMCA, ACA and Dept. of Public Health.
- Demonstrate and teach the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility to all campers and staff.
- Maintain positive public relations with parents, visitors and the general public at all times.
- Handle all scheduling and assignments of campers and staff for the entire day.
- Assist Camp Director in pre‑camp preparations.
- Make sure every activity and group are staffed and planned appropriately.
- Maintain knowledge of whereabouts of groups in the morning and afternoon and staff in the evening.
- Works directly with Specialists to provide assistance and support in developing activities that will engage and stimulate campers of all ages.
- Maintain visible and positive interaction with all staff and campers at all times.
- Enact camp emergency procedures when warranted.
- Meet with assigned staff to talk about personal growth and development.
- Capable to respond appropriately to emergencies and situations requiring First Aid and CPR.
- Assists with end of camp procedures.
- Willingness to go above and beyond written job description when asked.
- B.S. or equivalent experience in recreation, education or a related discipline preferred.
