Cooking Instructor (Summer Day Camp)
Location:
Newton, MA. Join JCC Greater Boston to design and lead engaging culinary activities for children in grades 4‑8 at our 8‑week summer day camp, June 22 – August 21.
What You’ll Do:
- Teach basic cooking skills, guide campers through recipes, explore fun food science experiments, and help them create delicious dishes.
- Plan age‑appropriate activities, adapt them for diverse camper needs, and keep a safe, engaging environment.
- Support camp team activities, transitions, special events, and overall camper inclusivity.

Primary Responsibilities:
- Plan, prepare, and lead age‑appropriate activities in your specialty area.
- Ensure safety and wellbeing of campers during activities.
- Create an inclusive and supportive environment encouraging skill‑building.
- Collaborate with counselors and camp leadership for a cohesive camper experience.
- Maintain, organize, and request supplies and equipment.
- Adapt activities to meet diverse camper abilities.
- Support camp‑wide special events and large-group programming as needed.
- Assist with overall camp operations (drop‑off/pick‑up, transitions, lunch, supervision, etc.).
Standard Staff Expectations:
- Create a welcoming dynamic respectful of all individuals.
- Other duties as assigned.
Position Details: Hourly, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday. Competitive starting rate of $20 per hour, adjusted for qualifications and experience.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
- High school degree preferred.
- College degree, certification, or equivalent experience in cooking, nutrition, or related field preferred.
- 1+ season (summer camp, semester, or other) instructor experience planning and leading activities for children.
- Customer service experience preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
- Enjoy working with children and helping them grow.
- Passion and expertise in your specialty area.
- Plan and lead age‑appropriate, engaging, inclusive activities.

- Strong communication, teamwork, and collaboration skills.
- Safety awareness and risk management.

Physical Requirements
- Work well in a busy, dynamic environment.
- Work in varying weather conditions for extended periods.
- Lift and carry objects weighing 30‑40 pounds.
- Sit and kneel; get at eye level with children frequently.
- Swim and supervise children in the pool (stand in pool).
