Position: Technical Specialist I

Technical Specialist I – Environmental Health & Engineering

The Technical Specialist I is responsible for the delivery of technically sound work products that meet internal and external client expectations. They provide technical support in the field at client site assessments, and support project deliverables with input from the Project Manager. The Technical Specialist I will assist with field investigations and report preparation. The job operates in a variety of office buildings, academic facilities, laboratories/pharmaceutical, industrial settings, other buildings, or at outdoor project sites.

The role routinely uses standard equipment such as computers, phones, and tablets as well as a variety of environmental testing instruments. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally in an environment with wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration.

Principal

Duties and Responsibilities Technical Expertise
  • Training will be provided.
  • Testing of safety equipment (emergency showers, eyewashes, chemical fume hoods, etc.).
  • Conduct environmental assessments, environmental sampling, indoor air quality (IAQ) investigations, laboratory inspections, and OSHA, DEP, MWRA, and EPA compliance activities.
  • Compare results and methods to federal, state, and local regulations and guidelines, reporting on the gaps and achievements.
  • Collect, analyze, and report on environmental data, such as building materials, air monitoring, and soil or water samples.
  • Collect quality data using specified procedures, observe safety precautions.
  • Testing of safety equipment at client sites.
  • Carry out training and development objectives.
  • Represent professional, respectful image in the field.
  • Apply basic scientific and engineering principles to work activities.
  • Clearly communicate basic technical concepts; may need editorial assistance.
  • Work within time frames specified by Project Manager for specific tasks.
  • Other tasks as necessary including fit testing across client sites.
Sales & Client Relations
  • Responsible for maintaining the integrity of the business by presenting a positive, professional, respectful and professional image to our clients.
  • Responsible for maintaining the integrity of the business by being highly responsive to client needs and expectations.
Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)
  • Collect quality data following specified quality control procedures and alert Project Managers on any deviations in procedures.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained per standard operating procedures.
  • Assist in the development of data tables used for reports; review data tables to ensure accuracy per EH&E’s quality control guidelines.
Training (Internal/External)
  • As the employee gains experience, may provide internal and/or external training on sampling techniques, appropriate donning and doffing of personal protective equipment (PPE), and use of sampling equipment.
Communication
  • Verbal communication skills and responsiveness to client needs are essential.
  • Collaborate in a small team to execute field work.
  • May be required to coordinate schedules with clients directly.
  • Assist with report and other written communications.
Financial Management
  • Be able to work to timelines and report any deviations to management.
Minimum Qualifications , Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • High school Diploma/GED required.
  • Bachelor’s degree (environmental science, industrial hygiene, safety, or the natural and/or physical sciences) preferred.
  • 0-1+ years of experience required.
  • 1+ year of relevant experience (consulting, EHS/IH) preferred.
  • Classroom or related work experience with OSHA Compliance, Safety Compliance, Industrial Hygiene or Microbiology preferred.
  • Asbestos Project Monitor/Asbestos Project Inspector or AARST Radon credential preferred.
  • HAZWOPER Certification - 40 Hour, OSHA 10 Hour, OSHA 30 hour preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Must be familiar with Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Driver’s license, travel required.
  • The ability to work well under pressure.
  • Team working skills.
  • Ability to work independently when required.
  • Availability during off‑hours, which are at times required.
  • Experience with standard office equipment (computers, phones, and photocopiers).
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Travel required (reliable form of transportation & valid driver’s license).

Hourly Range: $28.12 - $34.40
