Distribution Engineer

Contract Opportunity

Location: Newton, MA
Employment Type: Contract to Hire

ESPO Corporation is seeking a Staff Distribution Engineer for a contract-to-hire opportunity in Newton, MA
, supporting electric utility distribution projects. This role will contribute to the planning, design, and execution of 2.4kV to 34.5kV overhead and underground distribution systems
, supporting new construction, system upgrades, and redevelopment initiatives.

The ideal candidate will have hands-on utility distribution design experience, strong technical fundamentals, and the ability to collaborate across multi-disciplinary project teams from concept through construction.

Responsibilities
  • Work as part of a project team to design overhead and underground electrical distribution systems ranging from 2.4kV to 34.5kV
    .
  • Support projects through all phases of design and construction, adapting distribution plans to meet budget, technical, and client requirements.
  • Develop complete distribution voltage packages, including:
    • Distribution equipment installation
    • Feeder replacement and new feeder design
    • Underground and overhead cable replacement
  • Prepare design sketches, cost estimates, bills of material (BOMs), and associated design deliverables.
  • Perform distribution engineering calculations, including:
    • Cable pulling calculations
    • Voltage drop calculations
    • Pole loading calculations
  • Apply and interpret NESC and applicable utility standards, guides, specifications, and procedures.
  • Research, compile, and analyze project-related data to support engineering decisions and project execution.
  • Perform field inspections for overhead and underground electric facilities on public and private utility systems.
  • Prepare and distribute project communications related to:
    • Vegetation management
    • Third-party attachments
    • Right-of-way coordination
    • Outage planning
  • Develop client-facing presentations, reports, and visualizations to communicate technical results and project status.
  • Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all company policies and standards.
Required Qualifications

Education & Experience (One of the following):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related field from an ABET-accredited program with 3+ years of relevant engineering experience (consulting preferred),
    OR
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program plus successful completion of the FE exam and 3+ years of relevant engineering experience (consulting preferred),
    OR
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering with 2+ years of relevant engineering experience (consulting preferred)
Technical & Professional Skills
  • Strong knowledge of electrical distribution power flow
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with distribution design software and GIS tools
  • Working knowledge of easements, right-of-way, and permitting for utility distribution projects
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and critical thinking abilities
  • Demonstrated attention to detail, organization, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, multi-disciplinary environment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification preferred
Key Skillsets
  • Overhead and underground distribution design
  • Reconductoring design
  • Overloaded transformer replacement
  • Underground Residential Distribution (URD) replacements
  • Underground cable replacement
  • 3–7 years of utility distribution experience preferred
  • Willingness to travel to regional project sites as required
